‘The Fifth Beatle’ Returns: BBC Casts Its Hamburg-Era Fab Four for Landmark Series
LIVERPOOL — The search for the "Silver Beatles" is over. In a major announcement on Friday morning, the BBC confirmed the casting for its highly anticipated six-part drama, Hamburg Days, which will delve into the band’s formative, grit-stained years in Germany before they conquered the world.
While Hollywood is currently buzzing over Sam Mendes’s big-budget quadruple-biopic starring Harris Dickinson and Paul Mescal, the BBC’s production is taking a different path, casting a troupe of rising stars to portray the band during their "raw and dangerous" club residency in the St. Pauli district.
The New Lineup
The series, showrun by The Crown’s Christian Schwochow, has found its John, Paul, and George in a trio of fresh faces, but significantly, it places a heavy narrative focus on the band’s original drummer, Pete Best, and "the lost Beatle," Stuart Sutcliffe.
-
Rhys Mannion (known for Freud’s Last Session) has been cast as John Lennon.
-
Ellis Murphy will step into the boots of Paul McCartney.
-
Harvey Brett takes on the role of George Harrison.
-
Patrick Gilmore has secured the pivotal role of Pete Best, the drummer famously replaced by Ringo Starr on the cusp of superstardom.
-
Louis Landau (of Rivals) will portray Stuart Sutcliffe, the band’s original bassist and the "aesthetic architect" of their iconic look.
A Different Kind of Beatlemania
Based on the memoir by the band's close friends Klaus Voormann and the late Astrid Kirchherr, Hamburg Days promises a "uniquely intimate" look at the leather-clad rockers. Unlike the polished image of the mid-60s, this series aims to capture the sweat-soaked, amphetamine-fuelled performances at the Indra and Kaiserkeller clubs.
“This isn't the ‘Mop Top’ era,” said showrunner Christian Schwochow. “This is the story of five young men from Liverpool who were essentially forged in the fire of Hamburg. It’s about the art, the heartbreak, and the moments where they truly became the Beatles.”

Authenticity in the ‘Reeperbahn’
The production has already begun filming across Hamburg, Liverpool, and Munich. To ensure the musical sequences carry the necessary "rough-around-the-edges" energy, BAFTA-winning producer David Holmes (Killing Eve) has been tasked with curating the soundtrack.
Adding a final layer of authenticity, the real-life Klaus Voormann, now 87, is serving as an exclusive consultant on the project. Voormann, who famously designed the Revolver album cover, was a firsthand witness to the band’s transformation and Sutcliffe’s tragic death in 1962.
The Verdict
By focusing on the "lost" history of Pete Best and the German art scene that birthed the band's identity, the BBC is offering a compelling alternative to the traditional biopic. For many Beatles purists, the casting of relative unknowns including the musically gifted Mannion, is a welcome relief from the "star-power" saturation of major studio films.
As the production moves from the docks of Liverpool to the neon lights of Hamburg, the pressure is on these five young actors to prove that they can capture the lightning in a bottle that was the early Beatles.
