Back in the Shadows? Tom Cruise ‘Eyed’ for Rare Villain Role in Miami Vice Reboot

LOS ANGELES — He has spent the last two decades saving the world, but Tom Cruise may finally be ready to break bad again. According to a series of bombshell industry reports circulating this week, the Mission: Impossible icon is reportedly being "eyed" to play the lead antagonist in the upcoming Miami Vice reboot from director Joseph Kosinski.

The rumor, which first gained traction via insider Daniel Richtman and was further discussed on The Big Picture podcast, suggests that Cruise is the top choice to play the primary foil to Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler, who are reportedly in talks to step into the iconic roles of Ricardo Tubbs and Sonny Crockett.

The ‘Collateral’ Connection

If the deal closes, it would mark Cruise’s first major villainous turn since his chilling performance as the silver-haired hitman Vincent in 2004’s Collateral. Notably, that film was directed by Michael Mann, the original architect of the Miami Vice TV series and the 2006 film adaptation. Mann is reportedly serving as an executive producer on this new iteration, creating what fans are calling a "full-circle moment" for the director and star.

“Cruise is entering a genuinely unpredictable phase of his career,” one industry analyst noted. “With Mission: Impossible seemingly behind him, he’s looking for roles that challenge the ‘hero’ archetype. Playing a high-level drug lord in 1980s Miami is exactly the kind of left-turn that could redefine his legacy.”

A Retro-Rebirth for Universal

Unlike the gritty, modern aesthetic of the 2006 Jamie Foxx-led film, Kosinski’s take—written by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler)—will return the franchise to its neon-soaked roots. The film is reportedly set in 1985 and will serve as a direct reimagining of the original pilot episode, "Brother's Keeper."

The Kosinski-Cruise Synergy

The potential casting isn't just a random wish-list item. Cruise and Kosinski have developed one of Hollywood's most successful partnerships, having previously collaborated on the sci-fi thriller Oblivion and the cultural phenomenon Top Gun: Maverick.

Insiders suggest that Kosinski has been looking for a way to utilize Cruise’s "intense, calculated energy" in a way that audiences haven't seen in years. By placing him against the rising star power of Butler and Jordan, Universal Pictures is reportedly aiming for a "generational clash" that could dominate the 2027 summer box office.

A “Heated” Debate

Despite the excitement, some industry veterans have "pumped the brakes" on the rumor. During a recent episode of The Big Picture, host Sean Fennessey noted that while the idea is tantalizing, some sources have already moved to debunk the claim, suggesting that Cruise’s 2026 schedule, which includes Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Digger, may be too packed for a summer shoot in Miami.

However, with production on Miami Vice slated to begin in August 2026, there is a narrow window for the star to join the ensemble before he heads into his next major project.

Whether he’s sporting a pastel suit or a tactical vest, the prospect of Tom Cruise as the "king of the cocaine trade" has made Miami Vice the most talked-about production in town.
