Xbox Hikes Console and Game Prices Following Trump Tariffs

Xbox Hikes Console and Game Prices Following Trump Tariffs

Gamers across the globe are facing higher costs as Microsoft raises prices for its Xbox consoles, accessories, and new games. The Xbox Series X now sells for $599.99 in the U.S., a $100 increase from its original price, while the Series S also saw price bumps in multiple regions. This comes on the heels of similar moves by Sony and Nintendo, who have also increased their prices due to the ongoing economic uncertainty and supply chain issues. Although Microsoft hasn't directly blamed tariffs, the company referenced "market conditions and the rising cost of development" when explaining the reasons behind the decision.

These new prices aren’t just limited to consoles. Starting this holiday season, some new first-party Xbox games will launch at $79.99, matching Nintendo’s pricing for major titles like Mario Kart World. Xbox says the price hikes don’t affect current games, and not all future releases will carry the higher tag. Still, industry insiders warn that this could become the new standard, especially as inflation, tariffs, and rising development costs pressure companies to continue to be profitable.

Developers and analysts alike say the increases were expected. “Gamers will suffer most, with little hope of prices decreasing,” said Kedhrin Gonzalez, founder of Rip & Tear Studios. And while Xbox promises to “offer more ways to play,” some fear the changes could hurt accessibility and stunt growth in an already stagnant console market.
