Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Returns with Kate Moss, Transgender Models, and a Push for Diversity

Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Returns with Kate Moss, Transgender Models, and a Push for Diversity

Victoria’s Secret has made its highly anticipated return to the runway after a five-year hiatus, bringing back its iconic fashion show with a more diverse cast and a promise to “celebrate all women.” The show, held in New York, marked a shift from its controversial past, which saw declining ratings and criticism for its lack of inclusivity.

Kate Moss makes Victoria’s Secret debut at 50

One of the biggest surprises of the night was the appearance of British supermodel Kate Moss, making her Victoria's Secret debut at the age of 50. She walked the runway just moments after her daughter, 22-year-old Lila Moss, creating a mother-daughter moment that stole the spotlight. Moss, sporting the famous angel wings, was joined by other well-known faces such as Gigi and Bella Hadid, Adriana Lima, and Tyra Banks.

Banks, who hadn’t walked the Victoria’s Secret runway since 2005, returned to close the show. The former "America’s Next Top Model" host said she couldn’t resist the opportunity to step back into the spotlight for such a major comeback. Fellow Brazilian model Adriana Lima, who retired from the show in 2018, also made a return, adding to the nostalgic feel of the event.

Show makes history by featuring transgender models

However, it wasn’t just about familiar faces. This year's show made history by featuring transgender models Valentina Sampaio and Alex Consani. Sampaio became Victoria’s Secret's first transgender model back in 2019, and her presence, along with Consani, was a nod to the brand’s promise of increased inclusivity.

The music lineup was equally star-studded, with Cher leading the way by performing hits like "Believe" and "Strong Enough." The all-female musical roster also featured Blackpink’s Lisa and South African singer Tyla, creating an electric atmosphere for the audience.

Show criticised for containing mostly thin models despite increased diversity

Despite the effort to modernise, not everyone was impressed. Some critics noted that while there was more diversity, the runway was still predominantly filled with thin, conventionally attractive models. Teen Vogue’s Aiyana Ishmael expressed disappointment, saying the show reminded her of the unattainable beauty standards from her childhood.

Victoria’s Secret has been working hard to rebuild its image after years of controversy. The brand faced backlash for its lack of body diversity and inclusivity, particularly after a former executive made insensitive comments about transgender and plus-sized models. The 2018 show drew its lowest ratings ever and was eventually cancelled.

Janie Schaffer, Victoria’s Secret's chief design and creative officer, emphasised the strides the brand has made in recent years, stating that the company has “moved on as a business” and was eager to showcase more inclusive talent. The 2023 runway featured 50 models from 25 different countries, including plus-sized models like Ashley Graham and Paloma Elsesser.

While reactions have been mixed, it’s clear that Victoria’s Secret is aiming for a fresh start, balancing the legacy of its past with a renewed focus on diversity. Whether it has fully succeeded in doing so remains to be seen, but its return to the catwalk is a step toward a more inclusive future.
