Usyk Released After Being Detained At Krakow Airport
Ukrainian heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk has been released after being briefly detained at Krakow airport in Poland. Usyk, known for his undefeated record and his status as a national hero in Ukraine, was filmed in handcuffs by Polish news channels, leading to widespread speculation about the incident.
Why was he detained?
According to reports, the incident occurred when Usyk was attempting to board a flight to Spain for a training camp. However, when an associate of Usyk was not allowed to board, tensions rose, leading to both being detained by the authorities. The reason for the initial denial remains unclear, though Usyk’s promoter described the event as a simple misunderstanding.
Usyk says detainment was a “misunderstanding”
In a statement on social media, Usyk referred to the situation as a “misunderstanding” that was “quickly resolved.” He thanked those who expressed concern and praised the Ukrainian diplomats and Polish police for their professionalism.
“Respect to Polish police for conducting their obligations with no regards to height, weight, reach, and regalia,” Usyk added.
Issue sparked response from Zelensky
The incident prompted a reaction from Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, who expressed outrage over how Usyk was treated. Zelensky said on Telegram that he had spoken directly with the boxer after his detention and had ordered Ukraine’s foreign ministry to look into the matter.
“I was outraged by this attitude towards our citizen and champion,” Zelensky stated.
Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha, confirmed that Ukrainian diplomats had worked quickly to ensure Usyk's release, deeming the detention "disproportionate and unacceptable." He further stated that a formal note of concern would be sent to the Polish authorities.
Usyk’s wife also addressed the situation on social media, posting a blurred video of her husband surrounded by police. She clarified that Usyk had not been arrested and expressed relief that he was free.
Usyk to head to London
The heavyweight champion’s detainment comes ahead of his expected trip to London, where he plans to watch Daniel Dubois defend his IBF title against Anthony Joshua. Despite the brief controversy, Usyk remains focused on his own career, with a highly anticipated rematch against Tyson Fury scheduled for later this year.
