Universal to Build First European Theme Park in Bedfordshire

Universal to Build First European Theme Park in Bedfordshire

A massive Universal theme park is coming to Bedfordshire, marking the entertainment giant’s first resort built from scratch in Europe. Set to open in 2031 on a former brickworks site near Kempston Hardwick, the £50 billion project promises to be one of the largest and most advanced theme parks on the continent, with an expected 8.5 million visitors in its first year. Alongside the park, the 476-acre complex will feature a 500-room hotel and a retail and dining hub. Universal has hinted it may buy more land to expand the site and improve transport links.

The UK government hailed the project as a major vote of confidence in the economy, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves calling it “a vote of confidence in Britain as a place to do business.” The theme park is expected to create around 28,000 jobs—nearly 20,000 during construction and another 8,000 in hospitality and creative industries once open. Universal has committed to training local talent through apprenticeships and internships, and says 80% of park employees will be hired from the surrounding area.

Local residents have largely welcomed the investment, though some voiced concerns about infrastructure and traffic. Universal plans to upgrade local rail stations and add slip roads to the A421 to handle increased traffic. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy called the project “fantastic news” and said, “This is not just about bringing great American creations to Britain, this is also about showcasing great British creations to the world.” The deal remains subject to final planning approval.
