UK Introduces Mandatory Travel Permit for European Visitors

UK Introduces Mandatory Travel Permit for European Visitors

Starting today, most European visitors to the UK will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arriving. The system, first introduced for non-European nationals last year, costs £10 but will rise to £16 on April 9th. The UK government says the ETA will enhance border security by screening travelers before they board. Irish citizens, those with UK immigration status, and certain other travelers are exempt.

The ETA is linked to the traveler’s passport and allows multiple visits of up to six months within two years. Applications can be completed online or through the UK ETA app, with most decisions made within minutes. However, authorities advise applying at least three days in advance in case of further review. Airlines, ferries, and train companies are responsible for checking the ETA status of passengers before boarding, and those without approval may be denied travel.

While the UK strengthens its border measures, the EU is preparing to roll out its own Entry/Exit System (EES) in October, followed by the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). Similar to the UK’s ETA, ETIAS will require UK citizens to apply for pre-travel authorization and pay a fee before entering the Schengen zone.
