UK Foreign Minister Considers More Sanctions on Israeli Settlers

The UK may impose new sanctions on Israeli settlers soon in the West Bank. This is due to the rise in violence between Israelis and Palestinians. Foreign Minister David Lammy stated that while no new sanctions have been announced and the situation is being closely watched.

What’s Happening?

The West Bank is home to both Israelis and Palestinians. But the UK has seen a lot of chaos but tension remains high. Some Israeli settlers have carried out violent attacks on Palestinian communities. In response the UK  imposed sanctions earlier this year (in February and May). These sanctions targeted extreme settlers involved in the conflict.
The sanctions included asset freezes and travel bans for those guilty for the attacks. The goal was to put an end to the violence and show that the UK will not accept such acts of violence.

Will There Be More Sanctions?

Lammy said the UK is in talks with its partners. This included G7 nations and European countries. No further sanctions have been imposed yet. But the UK might consider them if the violence continues. According to him the UK is closely monitoring the situation. Discussions with partners are ongoing. Decisions will be taken soon if situation do not improve.

How Is Israel Reacting?

Not everyone is happy with the UK's actions. Israeli President Isaac Herzog has expressed his disappointment with the UK's changing stance toward Israel. Israel considers the UK to be a close partner. And some Israelis expected stronger backing. Herzog expressed his concerns in a recent interview. He highlighted that friends should support one another during difficult times.

The Bigger Picture

The UK has also been questioned regarding its arms exports to Israel. Some have called for an immediate stop to these exports. But Lammy believes this is not the best option at the moment. He argued that prohibiting arms exports to Israel could worsen regional conflicts. Instead the UK wants to avoid further violence while staying engaged with Israel and its issues.
