Two Tourists Killed by Elephant During Zambia Safari Walk
Two women, 68-year-old Easton Janet Taylor from the UK and 67-year-old Alison Jean Taylor from New Zealand, were killed by a charging elephant while on a walking safari in Zambia's South Luangwa National Park. According to Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba, the elephant, accompanied by a calf, charged the group at high speed. Safari guides fired shots in an attempt to stop the attack, wounding the elephant, but were ultimately unable to prevent the tragedy.
The women had been staying at Big Lagoon Camp, roughly 600 kilometers from Lusaka, and were part of a guided group exploring the park when the incident occurred. Authorities say the elephant was likely acting defensively due to its calf, a behavior well-known among female elephants.
This marks yet another deadly encounter with elephants in Zambia involving older tourists. Last year, two American women also died in separate attacks during safari drives. Officials continue to urge visitors to remain cautious when observing wildlife, especially near elephants with young.
