Transgender Women Banned from Women’s Football in England Following Court Ruling

Transgender Women Banned from Women’s Football in England Following Court Ruling

Starting from June 1st, transgender women will no longer be allowed to play in women’s football in England. The Football Association (FA) confirmed the move following a recent Supreme Court ruling that defined a woman in law as someone born biologically female. The FA had initially introduced stricter eligibility rules earlier in April but has now replaced that policy with a full ban.

The decision comes shortly after the Scottish FA announced a similar ban, and other sports bodies like the England and Wales Cricket Board are expected to follow. There are currently fewer than 30 transgender women playing at the grassroots level, and none in the professional game across the UK. The FA said the change was necessary to stay in line with both the new legal definition and international sporting guidelines from FIFA and UEFA.

While some have welcomed the decision as a step toward fairness in women’s sports, others say it will push trans players out of the game altogether. Despite the ruling, campaigners have stressed that the Equality Act still protects transgender people from discrimination.
