Starmer and Trump Meet in Scotland to Talk Gaza Ceasefire and Trade Tariffs

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is meeting U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday at Trump’s Turnberry golf resort in Scotland for wide-ranging talks that focused on the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and unresolved trade issues. Starmer, who is under pressure to push for a ceasefire, has reportedly welcomed U.S. efforts with Egypt and Qatar, aiming to “bring an end to the unspeakable suffering and starvation in Gaza and free the hostages who have been held so cruelly for so long.” Trump, meanwhile, blamed Hamas for derailing recent negotiations in Qatar, stating, “Hamas does not appear to be co-ordinated or acting in good faith.”

The UK has ramped up its role in the humanitarian response in Gaza, joining airdrop efforts and coordinating medical evacuations for children. But ministers insist airdrops are no substitute for open land routes. Foreign Secretary David Lammy warned only “unhindered” truck deliveries can meet demand, as malnutrition in Gaza reaches “alarming levels.” The UK has recalled its cabinet from summer recess to urgently assess next steps, while Starmer continues to face calls at home and abroad to recognise a Palestinian state.

Trade also loomed large over the talks, particularly U.S. tariffs on British steel. Trump praised the existing deal, saying, “It’s good for us. It’s good for them,” but gave no indication of lifting the 25% duty on UK steel exports. British officials confirmed they did not expect any breakthroughs on tariffs during this visit, though both sides said they’re working “at pace” to support workers and secure long-term industry stability.
