Sony Registers New Video Game Trademark 'Break In' Ahead of State of Play

Sony Registers New Video Game Trademark 'Break In' Ahead of State of Play

Sony Interactive Entertainment has fueled rampant internet speculation after registering a new video game trademark just days before its highly anticipated summer showcase.

The filings, which appeared on both European and United States patent and trademark offices with a registration date of May 20th, 2026, explicitly protect a project titled “Break In”. The listings are categorized under international classifications IC 009 and IC 041, which strictly govern video game software and digital entertainment services. While the legal paperwork confirms that the intellectual property is tied to a video game, Sony has not provided any official details regarding what the project actually is.

However, the timing and regional clues of the filing have led many industry insiders and fans to believe this is not a brand-new title, but rather a drastic internal reboot and renaming of Haven Studios' troubled live-service project, Fairgames. Part of the evidence towards this theory is that on the European trademark database, the secondary language for the submission is listed as French. This detail immediately pointed eyes toward Montreal-based developer Haven Studios.

Fairgames (originally stylized as Fairgame$) was first unveiled in 2023 as an online, competitive third-person competitive heist game focused on Robin Hood-style robberies. Because the core gameplay revolves around infiltrating secure locations, the title “Break In” would seamlessly fit the theme.

Furthermore, previous leaks regarding the project's mechanics heavily align with the new name. An earlier report indicated that the shooter will feature a dedicated extraction mode that explicitly utilizes the phrase “Break In” within its internal descriptions.

Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier also stoked the rumor mill on the ResetEra forum by jokingly typing the name as "Br€ak In" in a direct nod to the dollar-sign styling of the original *Fairgames* title.

A fresh identity might be exactly what the project needs. Behind-the-scenes whispers have consistently suggested that development at Haven Studios has been rocky. The studio has suffered the departures of high-profile leadership, including creative director Daniel Drapeau and high-profile industry veteran and studio founder Jade Raymond. Playtesting phases reportedly triggered severe internal anxiety over the quality of the build, prompting Sony to quietly push the game's release window back into late 2026.

Public perception of the genre has also soured dramatically since the title's initial announcement. Following the historic, catastrophic launch and immediate cancellation of PlayStation's live-service shooter Concord, fans have grown incredibly cynical toward corporate multiplayer projects. The initial trailer for Fairgames was met with widespread apathy online, meaning a complete cosmetic reset and fundamental overhaul might be Sony's only path to a successful launch.

Whether it is a desperate structural rebrand or a completely unannounced first-party project, the mystery will likely unravel very soon.

PlayStation has officially locked in a massive State of Play broadcast for June 2nd. The event is scheduled to run for over an hour and will even be broadcast as free community events at Alamo Drafthouse cinemas across the United States. Given that the heist shooter hasn't been shown to the public in three years, the timing of this trademark suggests Sony is finally ready to reintroduce the project to the world.
