A 21-year-old Austrian man, identified in court as Beran A., has pleaded guilty to orchestrating a plot to carry out a jihadist attack on a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna. The proceedings, which began this week in Wiener Neustadt, mark the start of a trial for the suspect who was apprehended just one day before the superstar was scheduled to perform in August 2024.
While the defendant has admitted to his role in the foiled concert attack, he has entered a not-guilty plea regarding other terror-related charges.
The plot was intercepted following intelligence provided by the CIA, leading Austrian authorities to call off all three sold-out Eras Tour performances at the Ernst Happel Stadium. The cancellation left nearly 200,000 ticket holders devastated, though fans famously gathered in the city to trade friendship bracelets and sing songs in the streets.
Speaking about the incident in a documentary, Taylor Swift reflected on the severity of the threat, stating that the tour narrowly "dodged a massacre situation." She also addressed the cancellation in a statement: "Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating. But I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives."
Prosecutors allege that Beran A. had been planning the attack since July 2024, swearing allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) and obtaining bomb-making instructions online. Authorities reported that a search of his residence revealed a nearly finished shrapnel bomb and other materials intended to inflict mass casualties.
The trial also involves a co-defendant, Arda K., who faces charges for being part of the same IS cell. While Beran A. focuses his guilty plea on the Vienna plot, prosecutors claim the two men, along with a third individual, were part of a wider conspiracy to carry out simultaneous attacks across the Middle East, including in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates.
Arda K. has admitted to traveling to Istanbul with the intent to conduct a militant attack, though he did not follow through. A third man involved in the network is currently detained in Saudi Arabia after allegedly stabbing a security official at the Grand Mosque in Mecca.
During the opening of the trial, Beran A.’s attorney, Anna Mair, addressed the gravity of the accusations: "My client has caused a great deal of fear and panic among many people, and he will have to answer for that, no question. But please try to look beyond the headlines."
If convicted, both defendants face a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years. The trial is scheduled to continue through late May.
