Joe Biden Withdraws From 2024 Presidential Race
President Joe Biden has withdrawn from the 2024 presidential race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor.
Biden, 81, shared his decision in a letter to the American people, stating that it was in the best interest of his party and the country for him to step down. He emphasised that it was the "greatest honor of my life to serve as your president" and assured that he would continue to fulfil his duties until the end of his term in January 2025.
Biden's decision comes after a series of challenges, including a shaky debate performance against Donald Trump on June 27th, and a recent bout with COVID-19. Despite initially planning to continue his campaign, Biden ultimately decided to step aside, stating that he believed it was more important to focus on his presidential responsibilities.
Biden's announcement has also led to speculation about whether he should resign from the presidency altogether. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson argued that if Biden isn't fit to run for president, he isn't fit to serve, calling for his immediate resignation. Trump was quick to react to Biden's withdrawal, claiming Harris would be easier to beat and criticising Biden's fitness to govern the country.
Kamala Harris, 59, expressed her gratitude for Biden's endorsement, vowing to unite the Democratic Party and defeat Trump in the upcoming election. "My intention is to earn and win this nomination," she stated. Harris has already begun gathering support from prominent figures within the Democratic Party, including endorsements from California Governor Gavin Newsom, and several other high-profile Democrats.
Within the Democratic Party, the focus now shifts to the upcoming national convention in August, where Harris is expected to be officially nominated. However, questions remain about whether other Democrats might challenge her for the nomination. Jaime Harrison, the Democratic National Committee Chair, promised a transparent process for selecting the party's next candidate.
Despite the turbulent political landscape, Harris remains optimistic about her chances. She has pledged to fight tirelessly to earn the nomination and unite the country against Trump's "extreme Project 2025 agenda." As the Democratic Party gears up for a crucial election, Harris's supporters are mobilising to ensure she has the backing needed to secure the nomination and lead the charge against Trump in November.
