Iconic 'Friends' Memorabilia Sells for Thousands at 30th Anniversary Auction

Iconic 'Friends' Memorabilia Sells for Thousands at 30th Anniversary Auction

A teal jumper worn by Matthew Perry as Chandler Bing in Friends has sold for $6,500—more than six times its original estimate—at an auction celebrating the 30th anniversary of the show.

The auction featured various items from the iconic sitcom, including costumes and props from the Central Perk café where much of the series was set.

Replica Central Perk sofa sells for $29,250

The top-selling item was a replica of the famous Central Perk orange sofa, which went for a staggering $29,250—almost 15 times its expected value. Julien’s Auctions, who organised the event, noted that thousands of bidders participated, reflecting the ongoing global love for Friends.

The teal jumper Perry wore in The One With The Holiday Armadillo was a highlight of the auction. In that episode, Chandler’s fiancée Monica, played by Courteney Cox, jokingly refuses to change her last name to Bing. The sweater was a fan favourite, and its sale underscored the lasting emotional connection fans have to the show and its characters.

Pink Winona Ryder outfit among other items sold at auction

Among other notable items sold were a pink outfit worn by Winona Ryder during her guest appearance, which fetched $2,600, and a white shirt worn by Bruce Willis, selling for $3,250. A replica of the Geller Cup Trophy, featured in The One With The Football, also exceeded expectations, selling for $9,100—30 times its estimate.

Auction held weeks before one-year anniversary of Perry’s death

The auction took place just weeks before the one-year anniversary of Perry’s tragic death. Perry passed away on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54 from the "acute effects of ketamine." Several people, including a doctor and a woman nicknamed the "ketamine queen," are facing trial in connection with his death.

David Goodman, CEO of Julien’s Auctions, noted that the enduring love for Friends was clear from the event’s success. He said, “Thirty years since its debut in 1994, people from all over the world are still falling in love with Friends.”
