IOC In Talks For The Creation Of Olympic Esports Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is proposing the creation of the "Olympic Esports Games," with a vote set for the 142nd IOC Session during the Paris 2024 Olympics. The initiative was announced by IOC President Thomas Bach, who highlighted the IOC's efforts to keep pace with the “digital revolution”.

The IOC is already in advanced discussions with a potential host, with an announcement expected soon.

The Olympic Esports Games are seen as a major step to connect with younger generations and expand the Olympic brand. The proposal aims to establish a new structure within the IOC, separate from the traditional Olympic Games' organisational and financial models while still maintaining the values of the Olympics.

Bach emphasised the enthusiasm from the esports community, stating, "This is further proof of the attractivity of the Olympic brand and the values it stands for."

The IOC's engagement with esports began in 2018 with the Esports Forum and has grown through initiatives like the Olympic Virtual Series in 2021 and the Olympic Esports Week in Singapore in 2023. These events showcased live finals and attracted over 500,000 participants and six million views, primarily from a younger audience.

The final decision on this proposal will be made next month during the Paris Olympics, potentially marking a significant milestone in the integration of esports into the Olympic movement.
