ICC Announces Record $7.9 Million Prize Pool for Women's T20 World Cup 2024

ICC Announces Record $7.9 Million Prize Pool for Women's T20 World Cup 2024

The ICC has announced a record-breaking prize pool for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, set to take place in the UAE from October 3rd to 20th.

The total prize money for the tournament has been boosted to nearly $8 million, more than double the amount from the 2023 edition. This increase marks a significant step forward in the ICC’s push for gender parity in cricket.

The winners of the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup will walk away with a massive $2.34 million, a substantial increase from the $1 million that Australia took home after their victory last year. Even the runners-up will benefit from this windfall, securing $1.17 million.

Teams that make it to the semi-finals won’t be left out either, with each receiving $675,000, which is over three times what the semi-finalists earned in 2023.

The prize money extends beyond just the knockout stages. Each group stage win will now be rewarded with $31,154, up from $17,500 in the previous tournament. Additionally, even teams that exit during the group stage will receive a base prize of $112,500, ensuring financial support for all 10 participating teams.

ICC to make prize money at comparable men’s and women’s events equal

These changes highlight the ICC’s commitment to growing women’s cricket and providing greater recognition and rewards for players.

"This move is in line with the ICC's strategy to prioritise the women's game and accelerate its growth by 2032," said the ICC in a statement.

They also emphasised that prize money at comparable men’s and women’s events will now be equal, marking a historic step for gender equality in cricket.

The prize pool for the men’s T20 World Cup remains higher only because it features 10 additional teams and 32 more matches, according to the ICC. The women’s edition will see intense competition as the world’s best teams vie for both glory and these record-breaking rewards.

The tournament, which was moved from Bangladesh due to political unrest, will take place in Dubai and Sharjah. Group stage matches will run until October 15th, with the semi-finals set for October 17th and 18th. The final showdown for the trophy will be held on October 20th, promising a thrilling conclusion to this landmark event.
