Heatwave in Greece Puts Delivery Workers at Risk
The recent heatwave in Greece "Kleon" has made life very hard for delivery workers. Temperatures in Athens have reached extreme levels. Road surfaces are hitting 70°C (158°F). Even though the situation is this worse many delivery drivers on scooters continue their work.
To help protect workers the Greek government has introduced rules. They have limit outdoor work from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. in areas where temperatures exceed 40°C (104°F). This rule is aiming to reduce workers' risks of heat exposure. However some delivery platforms have still been accepting orders during these restricted hours.
Unions are protesting for stronger protections. They want the work restrictions to start at 38°C (100.4°F) instead of 40°C. This follows tragic incidents where a delivery driver and a municipal worker died due to the heat.
The government is serious about enforcing these rules. Companies found violating the restrictions can face fines. Authorities emphasize that the health and safety of workers is a top priority.
These rules are crucial as Greece faces more frequent and intense heatwaves. Protecting workers especially those exposed to the sun is important during these extreme conditions.
