Former Commonwealth Champion Willie Limond Passes Away Age 45

Former British and Commonwealth super-lightweight champion Willie Limond has passed away at the age of 45. Limond, who won 42 out of 48 professional fights between 1999 and 2023, passed away in hospital after reportedly suffering a seizure while driving. His son, Jake, confirmed the news on social media.

 

Limond held multiple titles throughout his career, including the British super-lightweight and Commonwealth titles. One of his most memorable fights was against Amir Khan in 2007. Limond gave the emerging star a tough challenge, knocking him down before retiring from the fight before the ninth round due to a broken jaw.

 

The boxing community, including former opponents and promoters, has expressed deep sadness over Limond's passing, highlighting his contributions to the sport and his infectious personality. St. Andrew's Sporting Club, who promoted Limond, said: “Everyone at St Andrew's Sporting Club are shocked and deeply saddened at the loss of our friend, Willie Limond. Willie was not only a legend of the sport, but an infectious character who will be greatly missed by us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jake, Drew, Macy and the rest of the Limond family at this time."
