Elton John Struggles with Eye Issues, Delays New Album

Elton John Struggles with Eye Issues, Delays New Album

Sir Elton John, 77, has revealed that a severe eye infection has left him unable to see out of his right eye for the past four months, with his left eye also being affected by the illness.

Speaking on ABC's Good Morning America, Elton explained, “I can do something like this [interview], but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric for a start.” The legendary musician also admitted the condition has stalled progress on his long-awaited album with longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin.

The album with Taupin was announced last year, with Taupin calling it “incredibly personal.” Elton described the project as “wonderful” and “full of vitality” at the 2023 Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame ceremony. However, in his latest interview, the star admitted the release is delayed, saying, “It’s been a while since I’ve done anything.”

He described feeling “kind of stuck at the moment” but remains hopeful as he undergoes treatment. “There’s hope and encouragement that it will be okay,” he said, adding that he’s concentrating on regaining his vision.

“I’m determined to get back to recording,” Elton said. “We’re taking the initiative to try and get it better. At the moment, that’s really what we’re focusing on.”

The Rocketman hitmaker first shared news of the infection in September, calling it a “slow process” to recovery. The setback comes after years of health challenges, including surgeries for prostate cancer, hip and knee replacements, and managing type 2 diabetes.

Despite his vision problems, Elton has made several public appearances in recent months. He attended the premieres of his Disney+ documentary Never Too Late and performed alongside Dua Lipa at the Royal Albert Hall. He also introduced a number from his Broadway musical Tammy Faye at the Royal Variety Performance.
