Eidevall Resigns as Arsenal Women’s Head Coach

Jonas Eidevall has resigned as Arsenal Women's head coach after three years at the club. The 41-year-old Swede, who joined Arsenal in 2021, leaves following a tough start to the season, with only one win in their first four Women's Super League (WSL) matches and back-to-back defeats by Bayern Munich and Chelsea.

Eidevall's tenure saw some highs, including two FA Women's League Cup titles and leading the team to the semi-finals of the UEFA Women's Champions League for the first time in ten years during the 2022/23 season.

However, the recent dip in form, particularly a 5-2 defeat to Bayern in the Champions League and a 2-1 loss at home to Chelsea, has been a difficult spell for the club.

Assistant coach Renée Slegers will take charge as interim head coach, with her first test coming against Norwegian club Valerenga in the Champions League on Wednesday. Arsenal then face West Ham, who are yet to win in the WSL this season.

Arsenal's Sporting Director, Edu Gaspar, praised Eidevall's contribution, saying, "We thank Jonas for his commitment to the club and achievements here since joining us in 2021."

He added that the club is now focused on finding a new head coach while fully supporting Renée during her interim period.

Director of Women’s Football, Clare Wheatley, also expressed gratitude, noting, "Jonas has brought us back-to-back trophies in the last two seasons, together with many memorable moments on the pitch."

She voiced confidence in Slegers, saying, "We have full confidence in Renée to take responsibility for the team in the interim period."

Eidevall had signed a new three-year contract with Arsenal in October 2023, following two consecutive top-three finishes in the WSL. Despite the recent struggles, his time at the club will be remembered for the success he brought to the team, particularly in domestic cup competitions.

As the search for a new head coach begins, Arsenal fans will be hoping for a swift return to form under Slegers' leadership.
