Edinburgh and Birmingham Airports Drop 100ml Liquid Rule

Passengers flying from Edinburgh and Birmingham airports can now carry liquids of up to two litres in their hand luggage, marking the end of the long-standing 100ml restriction. The change, introduced ahead of the summer holiday rush, comes after the rollout of advanced 3D scanners that no longer require liquids or large electronics to be removed at security.
Gordon Dewar, chief executive at Edinburgh Airport, said: “A whole generation of travellers have only known the 100ml rule to be the case, so it really is a momentous day.” The airport has invested £24 million in new lanes and eight state-of-the-art scanners, becoming the first in Scotland to lift the rule. Birmingham introduced the change just days before.
While passengers can now breeze through security with full-size toiletries and laptops still packed, officials are urging travellers to double-check the rules at their destination. Not all airports have made the switch, and return flights may still enforce the 100ml limit.
The shift is part of a wider but staggered rollout of CT X-ray technology across the UK. Though the scanners were supposed to be installed at all major airports by June 2024, delays and technical hiccups meant some airports, like Heathrow and Manchester, are still sticking to the old rules for now.
