Caroline Dubois Made WBC Lightweight Champion
Caroline Dubois has been officially elevated to WBC lightweight world champion.
The 23-year-old Londoner, who secured the interim title in August with a victory against Maira Moneo, was upgraded to the WBC lightweight world champion after Katie Taylor, a legendary figure in women’s boxing, decided to vacate it to focus on other divisions. Taylor last fought at lightweight in 2022 and has since defended her undisputed light-welterweight crown.
Dubois is set to make her first title defense on January 11th in Sheffield against Canada’s Jessica Camara, a former world title challenger, on what will also be Dubois' 24th birthday.
Dubois has an impressive 10-0 professional record, with five wins by knockout, since turning pro after competing in the Tokyo Olympics. The title fight against Camara, who has 14 wins and four losses, could be one of Dubois’ toughest challenges yet.
Dubois was presented with her championship belt by WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman during the governing body’s annual convention in Hamburg on Wednesday. Expressing her excitement, Dubois said, "It's always been my dream to become world champion, and this is just the start of the journey for me. I look forward to defending my WBC world title on January 11 in Sheffield."
Promoter Ben Shalom shared his confidence in Dubois' future in the sport, stating, “We are only just starting to see her true potential. We believe Caroline will become the future face of women’s boxing.”
This moment mirrors a similar achievement by Dubois' older brother, Daniel Dubois, who was upgraded to IBF heavyweight champion earlier this year.
