Cards Against Humanity Sues SpaceX for $15 Million Over Land Trespass and Damage

Cards Against Humanity Sues SpaceX for $15 Million Over Land Trespass and Damage

Cards Against Humanity (CAH), the company behind the popular card game, has filed a $15 million lawsuit against SpaceX, accusing the aerospace giant of trespassing and damaging land the game company owns in Cameron County, Texas.

The land was purchased in 2017 with the help of 150,000 supporters who each contributed $15 through the “Cards Against Humanity Saves America” campaign as part of a political stunt aimed at obstructing former President Donald Trump's efforts to build a border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

What does the lawsuit say?

According to the lawsuit, SpaceX has been using CAH’s land without permission for at least six months. The land, located near SpaceX’s Starbase operations, was allegedly being used as a staging area for construction materials, vehicles, and other equipment, leading to significant damage to its natural state.

CAH had no plans for developing the land, intending to keep it natural and untouched, and claims SpaceX destroyed vegetation and other features of the land, which had been maintained as a piece of untouched nature. The alleged trespassing, they argue, not only damaged the land but also hurt their relationship with their supporters.

The game company also pointed out that the land contained a clear “No Trespassing” sign.

CAH said, “SpaceX’s abuse of this Property has not only destroyed its natural condition, but has also caused even greater harm to CAH by virtue of the damage it has caused to CAH's relationship with its paying supporters.”

In response to CAH’s complaints, SpaceX reportedly made a lowball offer to purchase the land for less than half its market value, giving the game company a 12-hour deadline to accept the deal. CAH declined the offer and proceeded to file the lawsuit.

On a website dedicated to the legal dispute, CAH stated that if they win the case, they plan to distribute $100 to each of the 150,000 original donors.

Neither Elon Musk nor SpaceX has publicly commented on the lawsuit. However, CAH has not held back in its criticism, stating in a campaign message that SpaceX “f***ed” their land, and accusing Musk of believing he could "just dump his shit all over our gorgeous plot of land without asking."

Conflict sparked by SpaceX growth in Texas

The conflict is a reflection of SpaceX's rapid development in southern Texas, where it has been expanding its Starbase operations. Local communities have expressed concerns about unchecked expansion, and SpaceX has faced criticism over its property dealings.

Reuters previously reported similar complaints from other landowners near Starbase, further fueling the debate around SpaceX’s operations in the region.

In addition to the alleged trespassing, SpaceX has also faced regulatory scrutiny for environmental violations at its Texas facility. The company has been accused of repeatedly releasing pollutants into or near bodies of water, according to a state agency report from earlier this year.

Despite these challenges, SpaceX continues to dominate the space launch market, holding an estimated 80% market share and securing new government contracts.

For now, the legal battle between CAH and SpaceX remains unresolved. However, the creators of the card game are determined to see their land restored and to protect the integrity of their crowdfunding campaign.

On their website, CAH cheekily suggested they would be willing to “accept Twitter.com as compensation,” referencing Musk’s purchase of the social media platform.
