Cadillac F1 Enters 2026 Grid With At Least Six Drivers On Shortlist

Cadillac has officially secured its place on the Formula 1 grid for the 2026 season, becoming the sport’s 11th team on the track. Backed by General Motors, the team has now entered the driver market, with team principal Graeme Lowdon confirming they are considering at least six potential candidates. "Formula 1 is not a playground, this is the pinnacle of world motor sports," Lowdon said, emphasizing that driver selection will be based on merit.

Several experienced F1 drivers without current seats, including Zhou Guanyu, Valtteri Bottas, Sergio Pérez, and Mick Schumacher, are in contention. American IndyCar driver Colton Herta is also being considered, but he has yet to secure a super license. "He's an incredibly talented driver," Lowdon acknowledged, but added, "We just have to live with that. That's a regulation. We just have to respect it."

Despite Cadillac’s strong American identity, the team is not committed to selecting an American driver unless they meet the performance criteria. "I see no reason why an American driver can't be selected on merit," Lowdon said. Jak Crawford, a Formula 2 driver and Aston Martin reserve, has also been mentioned as a possibility.

Cadillac’s entry marks a significant milestone for the sport, aligning with the new 2026 regulations. The team will initially use Ferrari engines but has long-term plans to develop its own power units under the TWG GM Performance Power Units LLC banner. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem welcomed the team’s addition, calling it "a transformative moment" for Formula 1.

With over 300 personnel already working on aerodynamics, chassis, and component development, the team is making rapid progress. The next big decision—choosing the drivers—remains a top priority, with Lowdon confirming that discussions are now in full swing.
