Berlin's Techno Scene Enters UNESCO's Cultural Heritage List

Berlin's techno scene has secured a coveted spot on Germany's list of intangible cultural heritage, a triumph hailed as "another milestone" for the genre. The move, announced by Germany's UNESCO Commission, recognizes techno's profound influence on the cultural fabric of the city for over three decades.

Spearheaded by Rave The Planet, a non-profit advocating for electronic music culture, the campaign garnered widespread support. "Congratulations to all the cultural creators who have shaped and contributed to Berlin’s techno culture," said Rave The Planet in a social media statement.

The recognition not only celebrates Berlin's techno producers, artists, and club operators but also signifies a significant step towards safeguarding the city's club culture. Lutz Leichsenring of Berlin’s Clubcommission expressed optimism, stating, "The decision will help us ensure that club culture is recognized as a valuable sector worthy of protection and support." Beyond its cultural significance, inclusion in the UNESCO list grants techno clubs easier access to governmental funding and additional protection under planning laws.

Techno's rise in Berlin parallels the city's post-reunification era, where abandoned spaces became vibrant venues for self-expression and communal gatherings. Despite recent challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and economic pressures, the techno scene perseveres as a symbol of resilience and creative vitality. "Techno has become a refuge for people who are marginalised," notes Berlin-based DJ and music producer Peter Kirn, emphasising the scene's inclusive nature.

The addition of techno to Germany's intangible cultural heritage list underscores the nation's commitment to preserving diverse cultural expressions. Alongside techno, other entries include fruit wine, mountaineering, and distinctive cultural events like the Kirchseeoner Perchtenlauf parade. This recognition not only honours tradition but also reflects the evolving cultural landscape, where both heritage and innovation thrive in harmony.
