15 Indian MPs Suspended Following Security Breach in Parliament

In the wake of a security breach in the Indian Parliament, fifteen opposition MPs have been suspended for protesting. The breach occurred on the 22nd anniversary of a deadly attack on the parliament, involving two intruders shouting slogans and releasing coloured smoke, leading to the arrest of four individuals.

The motive behind the intrusion remains unclear, prompting the federal home ministry to launch an investigation. In response to the incident, security around the parliament was heightened, with barricades restricting entry.

Opposition MPs called for a discussion on the incident and statements from the prime minister and home minister, resulting in the suspension of 14 MPs until the end of the session on December 22. Disruptions occurred in both houses, leading to the suspension of Rajya Sabha opposition MP Derek O'Brien for "ignoble conduct."

The incident sparked calls for action against Pratap Simha, a BJP MP who allegedly signed the passes used by the intruders. Visitor passes have been temporarily suspended pending a security review.

The four arrested individuals, accused of the breach, are from different states and will appear in court. Opposition leaders have emphasised the need for accountability and action against those responsible for the security lapse.

The suspended MPs include nine from the Congress, two from the CPM, one from the CPI, and one from the DMK. Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien was also suspended for "unruly behavior" in the Rajya Sabha.

The suspension has triggered criticism, with Congress MP KC Venugopal denouncing it as a "horrible, undemocratic move."

Meanwhile, the government faces scrutiny over the security breach, with the opposition demanding a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah. Questions are raised about BJP MP Pratap Simha's role in facilitating their entry, adding complexity to the ongoing investigation.
