‘Is It Clayface or a Nightmare?’: DC Fans Divided as First Clayface Trailer Promises Body-Horror Over Heroics

BURBANK, CA — The first footage of DC Studios’ highly anticipated standalone film Clayface has finally emerged from the shadows, and the reaction from the fandom has been as visceral and "shapeless" as the protagonist himself.

Unveiled late on Tuesday, the teaser for the Mike Flanagan-directed project has sent shockwaves through social media. However, in a trend becoming familiar for the "Elseworlds" slate of DC projects, viewers are split down the middle: one half is hailing it as a masterpiece of body horror, while the other is lamenting the departure from the "classic" Batman villain aesthetic.

A ‘Cronenberg-Esque’ Nightmare

Clocking in at just under two minutes, the trailer avoids the traditional CGI-heavy spectacle associated with modern superhero cinema. Instead, Flanagan, the maestro behind The Haunting of Hill House, appears to have leaned into practical effects and psychological dread.

The footage focuses on Basil Karlo (rumoured to be played by Bill Skarsgård), a failing character actor whose desperation to reclaim his youth leads him to a transformative, and horrific, chemical addiction. The "transformation" scenes, which feature skin bubbling and facial features sliding out of place, have drawn immediate comparisons to David Cronenberg’s The Fly.

“I didn’t expect a DC trailer to make me want to look away from the screen,” wrote one popular fan account on X. “It’s not a superhero movie; it’s a tragedy about a man literally melting into his own ambition.”

The ‘Shape-Shifter’ Debate

While the horror community is rejoicing, a vocal segment of the DC fanbase has expressed frustration. The primary point of contention? The lack of the "Mud-Monster" look popularized by Batman: The Animated Series.

The ‘Clayface’ Reaction Spectrum

Fan Sentiment Common Feedback Tonal Comparison
The Horror Purists "The most original thing DC has done since Joker." The Fly / The Thing
The Comic Loyalists "Where is the 10-foot mud giant? This is just a sad guy." Darkman
The Cinematophiles "The lighting and practical FX look incredible." The Haunting of Hill House
The Skeptics "Another ‘Elseworlds’ project that’s too dark for its own good." The Batman (2022)

Elseworlds: A Growing Gamble

Clayface is the latest project under the DC Elseworlds banner—a label overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran that allows filmmakers to tell stories outside the main DC Universe (DCU) continuity.

Following the success of The Batman and Joker, the studio seems emboldened to experiment with genre. Sources close to the production suggest that Flanagan was given "total creative freedom" to strip away the comic-book tropes and focus on a "theatrical tragedy."

The ‘Same’ Reaction?

The polarized response mirrors the initial reception of 2019’s Joker. At the time, critics and fans were unsure if a comic-book movie without a hero could succeed.

“It’s the same cycle every time,” noted industry analyst Rebecca Stone. “DC releases something that looks like a prestige indie film disguised as a villain origin story, the fans argue about ‘comic accuracy’, and then the film goes on to win awards. If the Clayface trailer is polarizing, it’s exactly where DC wants it to be.”

What’s Next?

While the trailer has set the internet ablaze, many questions remain. The footage notably lacked a formal appearance from any version of the Caped Crusader, confirming Flanagan’s intent to keep this a "solo character study."

Clayface is currently scheduled for a October 2026 release, perfectly timed for the Halloween season. Whether it will be a mud-splattered masterpiece or a shapeless mess remains to be seen, but for now, DC has everyone’s attention.
