Weather warnings issued for heavy rain and strong winds in parts of UK

Rain in parts of the United Kingdom has been issued for meteorological warnings, as well as a more severe amber alert. Heavy rainfall in eastern Scotland, Northern Ireland, and portions of England and Wales would cause significant rainfall levels and the possibility of floods. The rain will be accompanied by high winds, especially in north-east Scotland. Storm Ingrid, a Portuguese weather service storm, will bring rain and high winds to south-western England and Wales on Friday. More details have been published here.

Heavy rain and high winds have continued in eastern Scotland, where a Met Office amber has been in force for Grampian, Angus, Perth, and Kinross until 18:00 GMT. Rainfall accumulations of 60-80mm are likely, with up to 100-120mm over high ground. In a few places, the number since Wednesday evening may have surpassed 150 mm. Any surface water and river flooding in the area is predicted. Also in eastern Scotland, there is also a wide yellow warning, with rainfall accumulations of 30-60mm being observed regularly. The Met Office warns that with the ground already saturated from recent rain and snow, it could result in some flooding in areas. A strong south-easterly wind in north-east Scotland would also make it feel particularly uncomfortable. On Thursday, yellow warnings are in place in south-east Wales, Somerset, and Devon, from 08:00 to 16:00, and Northern Ireland from 10:00 to 23:59. Persistent and heavy rainfall in these areas through the day could result in floods and transportation disruptions. Almost 160 flood warnings were issued across England, Scotland, and Wales on Thursday morning. Flood watches Elsewhere, the weather is still cloudy and breezy, with rain and drizzle. Storm Ingrid, which was forecast by the Portuguese weather service, would bring strong winds and heavy rain to the UK on Friday. Ingrid's center will be located in the south-west of England and north-west France. Winds in the United Kingdom will increase on Friday, with gusts up to 60mph predicted in south-west England and Wales, as well as more heavy rain at times. From 02:00 GMT Friday to 09:00 Saturday, a Met Office yellow warning will be in force. Although the winds in south-west England would not be as strong or damaging as those during Storm Goretti, there could also be some impacts. Flooding is expected on the coastal plains, and with coastal gales, there will be major overton waves. As the center of Ingrid stalls to the south-west, it is likely that it will remain windy through Saturday morning. As the day progresses, winds will gradually diminish. The remainder of the United Kingdom will avoid any impacts from Storm Ingrid's storm, but eastern Scotland's rain will persist, with some snow over higher ground.

Cold snap coming

Although Storm Ingrid will be affecting south-western areas of England, for the remainder of the United Kingdom, a brisk south-east to easterly wind will greet us. With a cold snap next week, temperatures in north-east Europe will begin to decrease over the weekend and next week. Temperatures will drop to 4 to 6 degrees below the average for the end of January by Monday. The easterly wind will also bring occasional wintry showers, as well as snow for a few parts of the United Kingdom. The exact location and how much snow is unknown, but wintry threats are likely, but it is likely.
