Two Arrested Following Arson Attack on London Synagogue

Police have arrested two young men in connection with an arson attack on the Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow, north-west London. The suspects, who are a 17-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man, were detained overnight following the incident, which occurred at around midnight on Sunday.

Authorities reported that an object, described by a police spokesperson as a "bottle with some sort of accelerant” had been thrown through the window of the building. The attack caused minor smoke damage to one of the rooms in the building, but thankfully no one was hurt and the building did not suffer any significant structural damage.

This arrest is part of a broader crackdown on a series of recent attacks that all have connections to the Jewish community. Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes confirmed that officers have now made 15 arrests regarding six separate incidents targeting Jewish facilities, a Jewish-led ambulance service, and a Persian media company.

Investigators are looking into whether these acts are tied to an online group known as Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia. The group has publicly claimed responsibility for some of the recent attacks as well as for similar attacks across Europe. The Met has said that it is investigating the authenticity of the claims.

A major focus for detectives is determining whether these crimes are being orchestrated by the Iranian government. Deputy Commissioner Jukes noted that investigators are treating the potential link to Iran as a "very serious line of inquiry in relation to these events."

Jukes suggested that the perpetrators are likely not ideologically driven, but rather opportunists recruited via the internet. He explained, "We’ve seen a pattern... people taking cash, as it looks like quick and easy money." He further characterized the situation as "part of the modern hybrid war fought by proxies."
