‘Petrified of Cue Cards’: Tom Holland Reveals Dyslexia is the Reason He Repeatedly Turns Down ‘Saturday Night Live’

LONDON — Hollywood superstar Tom Holland has disclosed the deeply personal reason why he has repeatedly rejected invitations to host America’s premier sketch show, Saturday Night Live (SNL), admitting he is "petrified" of the broadcast’s fast-paced environment due to his severe dyslexia.

The 30-year-old London-born actor, globally celebrated for anchoring Marvel’s multi-billion-pound Spider-Man franchise, made the candid revelation during an appearance on the Good Hang podcast, hosted by SNL veteran and comedian Amy Poehler on Tuesday 2nd June.

Despite being one of the most bankable and physically daring actors of his generation, famously performing high-stakes stunts and a legendary, viral lip-sync rendition of Rihanna's Umbrella, Holland confessed that the chaotic mechanics of live American television represent his ultimate professional nightmare.

The Terror of the Ever-Changing Script

Saturday Night Live, which is currently broadcasting its historic 51st season on NBC, is famous for its grueling, high-pressure production schedule. Sketches are routinely rewritten, trimmed, or entirely replaced just minutes before going live on air, forcing hosts and cast members to rely entirely on hand-written cue cards held up next to the cameras.

For Holland, who was diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, this specific method of working creates an insurmountable barrier.

“I’m heavily dyslexic, which is one of the reasons why I’ve never done SNL,” Holland explained to Poehler. “I’m just so petrified at the concept of, like, trying to read something and they change it. I can read fine, but when I have to read out loud, it just becomes a kind of... it’s like a mental block, and I can freeze.”

The actor emphasized that his hesitation does not stem from a lack of enthusiasm for the show itself. On the contrary, he revealed that NBC executives have formally approached him "a few times" to anchor an episode:

“I’ve been really lucky that they’ve asked me a few times to do it, and the truth is that I’m actually just really scared at the prospect. I love the show, and I love the idea of having fun and making a fool of yourself in such a fun, creative way. It’s just that thing of the cue cards.”

The Silent Challenge of the Table Read

Holland's disclosure offers a rare, illuminating glimpse into the everyday operational adjustments he must make while navigating big-budget Hollywood film sets.

The actor confessed that even on standard cinematic productions, the initial cast table read, conventionally a relaxed, celebratory corporate gathering, functions as his "worst day at work." To combat the anxiety of freezing in front of directors and peers, Holland utilizes an intensive pre-reading strategy to memorize material before he ever steps into a rehearsal room.

“At the read-through, I will really try and highlight everything and learn my lines ahead of time, so that I’m more kind of skimming it than I am reading it,” he explained.

Poehler attempted to reassure the British star during the podcast, jokingly reminding him of the comedy institution's wild history: "You have to remember, there have been people that have hosted who have been fully on drugs—so I think you can do it."

The Non-Host Marvel Aligned Alumni Ledger

Marvel Cinematic Alumnus Mainline Character Portrayal SNL Hosting History Key Industry/Production Context
Tom Holland Peter Parker / Spider-Man Never Hosted Repeatedly declined due to cue-card reading anxieties
Zendaya MJ (Spider-Man Universe) Never Hosted Holland's partner; remains highly requested by NBC
Chris Evans Steve Rogers / Captain America Never Hosted Has historically expressed severe aversion to live TV
Mark Ruffalo Bruce Banner / The Hulk Never Hosted Prefers traditional theatrical and long-form prestige drama

A Busy Cinematic Slate Ahead

While Studio 8H in New York remains off the itinerary for the foreseeable future, Holland’s theatrical slate remains exceptionally dense.

The actor is currently preparing to lead Christopher Nolan’s highly secretive, massive cinematic adaptation of Homer’s epic The Odyssey, starring alongside Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, and his fiancée Zendaya. Holland described working with the Oscar-winning director as an absolute "dream come true," despite it being one of the most physically and intellectually demanding shoots of his career. Production is also ramping up on the highly anticipated Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is slated to begin principal photography later this winter.

The Verdict

By speaking so transparently about his learning disability, Tom Holland effectively humanizes the immense pressures of modern stardom. It is a comforting reminder to audiences that a man capable of swinging off skyscrapers on screen can still be entirely intimidated by a cardboard cue card.

While comedy purists may hold out hope that he might one day conquer his fears and brace the live New York stage, Holland's willingness to prioritize his own mental boundaries proves he is just as grounded as the neighborhood hero he portrays.
