‘Fast vs Meticulous’: Jimmy Jam Reveals the Truth Behind the Prince and Michael Jackson Rivalry
HOLLYWOOD — For decades, the narrative of pop music’s golden era has been defined by a supposed "cold war" between its two greatest titans: Michael Jackson and Prince. However, legendary producer Jimmy Jam, who worked intimately with both icons, has finally set the record straight on what really happened behind closed doors.
Speaking at the Hollywood premiere of the new biopic Michael on Sunday evening, Jam dismissed the idea of a bitter feud, instead describing a relationship built on high-stakes professional "competition" and profound mutual respect.
Spontaneity vs Perfectionism
Jam, one half of the powerhouse production duo Jam & Lewis, noted that the perceived tension between the two stars often stemmed from their diametrically opposed creative philosophies.
“The way they went about doing what they do was totally different,” Jam explained. “I always say Prince would start a record at the beginning of the day, and by the end of the day, the record would be totally done, mixed, and ready to go. He was incredibly spontaneous.”
In contrast, Jam recalled his time working with Jackson on the 1995 hit Scream, describing a level of detail that bordered on the obsessive. “Michael was very meticulous. I remember we literally spent three days changing one line. He just kept saying, ‘We have to challenge ourselves.’ Finally, we had to tell him, ‘Okay, we’re done challenging that. It sounds great!’”
A Secret Mutual Influence
While the media often portrayed the pair as enemies, fuelled by incidents like Prince famously declining to participate in the "We Are the World" recording, Jam insists that the two stars were constantly "checking in" on each other’s work.
“They were rivals on the charts, sure, but they were fans of one another,” Jam told reporters. “Prince was definitely influenced by Michael, and Michael was definitely influenced by Prince. They pushed each other to be better because they both wanted to be the absolute best.”

The ‘Michael’ Effect
Jam’s comments arrive as the Jaafar Jackson-led biopic, Michael, dominates the global box office. The film, which opened on 24th April, has reignited interest in the 1980s music scene, with audiences particularly fascinated by the recreations of Jackson’s most legendary studio sessions.
The producer admitted that there isn't a day that goes by where he doesn't think about Prince (who passed away ten years ago this month) or wonder how the two legends would view the current landscape of AI-generated music.
The Verdict
By peeling back the curtain on the "feud," Jimmy Jam has provided a much-needed human perspective on two figures who often felt like untouchable gods. The "truth," it seems, wasn't about hate or ego, but rather the sheer exhaustiveness of genius. As Jam put it: “They might not have clicked in a room together, but they were two different individuals who defined an era by looking over their shoulders at one another.”
Michael is currently playing in cinemas worldwide. The Magic Hour Tour documentary, featuring Jimmy Jam, is set to stream on Netflix later this year.
