Sex Education Season 4 is set to finish with a bang
As we come to the end of the summer and the start of fall, we also approach the release of the final season of hit Netflix show Sex Education, which premiers on September 21st.
The final season will see the return of fan favourites, Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield), Eric Effiong (Ncuti Gatwa), Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey) and many more in the new season, which sees Otis and Eric start their A-Levels at Cavendish Sixth form College whereas Maeve is studying abroad in the United States.
Show creator Laurie Nunn told The Guardian that she was “really proud of what the show has achieved and the conversations it started”. The final series will see a darker turn and, in a contrast to the usual witty back-and-forths that we’ve come to see from the main cast, the main characters are set to have a lot less interaction this time around as they focus on their own paths. Nunn also told The Guardian that this season is going to be exploring the idea of failure and how it impacts teens.
The series is set to focus on a new set of characters portrayed by Felix Mufti (Roman), Anthony Lexa (Abbi), and Alexandra James (Aisha) who are a clique called “The Coven”. There is a distinct focus on trans characters this season, with Cal (Dua Saleh) who is non-binary, Abbi, a trans woman and Roman, a trans man. Nunn said that the choice to feature these characters was intentional so that they could feature the trans voices and experiences that are lacking in mainstream media debate.
Although this is likely the last time we will be seeing the Sex Education cast all together on the screen, this will not be the last time that we see these actors, with Emma Mackey revealing in an interview with Elle that she is set shoot a film with James L Brooks later this year, and Ncuti Gatwa returning to screens as the 15th Doctor in iconic UK television series Doctor Who this Christmas.
Here is how Netflix has described season 4:
“Following the closure of Moordale Secondary, Otis and Eric now face a new frontier—their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College. Otis is nervous about setting up his new clinic, while Eric is praying they won’t be losers again. But Cavendish is a culture shock for all the Moordale students—they thought they were progressive but this new college is another level. There’s daily yoga in the communal garden, a strong sustainability vibe and a group of kids who are popular for being…kind?! Viv is totally thrown by the college’s student-led, non-competitive approach, while Jackson is still struggling to get over Cal. Aimee tries something new by taking an Art A Level and Adam grapples with whether mainstream education is for him. Over in the U.S., Maeve is living her dream at prestigious Wallace University, being taught by cult author Thomas Molloy. Otis is pining after her, while adjusting to not being an only child at home, or the only therapist on campus.”
