‘Scarcity and Surprise’: Ryan Reynolds Casts Doubt on Immediate Return for Deadpool 4
LOS ANGELES — Fans hoping for a swift follow-up to the record-breaking carnage of Deadpool & Wolverine may need to exert some "maximum patience." Ryan Reynolds has confirmed that a fourth solo outing for the Merc with a Mouth is not currently on the Marvel Studios fast-track, suggesting the character may be pivoting away from the spotlight entirely.
Speaking during a press junket for the fifth season of his docuseries Welcome to Wrexham on Tuesday 28th April, Reynolds revealed that while he is "always writing," he has no immediate plans to "centre" the character in a standalone film again.
The ‘Supporting Character’ Shift
The 49-year-old actor, who has become synonymous with the R-rated anti-hero since 2016, explained that the creative demands of leading a franchise may have reached a natural conclusion following the multiversal success of his 2024 MCU debut.
“I have a few things written that I love, but I’m not in any huge rush right now,” Reynolds told Collider. “Deadpool works best on both scarcity and surprise, so jumping right back into it full-on right now is probably something I’m not going to do.”
In a separate appearance on the TODAY show’s Sunday Sitdown, Reynolds went a step further, suggesting that Wade Wilson's future lies in being part of a team rather than a solo act. “I don’t think I’m going to centre him again,” he admitted. “I think he’s a supporting character, you know? He’s a guy that’s great in a group.”
Redundant or Refreshing?
The "disappointing" update comes despite Deadpool & Wolverine grossing a staggering $1.3 billion and becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. Reynolds’ reluctance appears to stem from a desire to avoid "creative stagnation."
As he previously hinted to The Hollywood Reporter, the "back-against-the-wall" formula that drives Deadpool's solo stories is difficult to replicate a fourth time. “A fourth time feels a little iterative and redundant,” Reynolds noted. “That doesn’t mean sacrificing fun. There is still an arc for Deadpool which is fulfilling and powerful.”
The Deadpool Box Office Legacy
| Film | Year | Global Box Office | Key Status |
| Deadpool | 2016 | $782.6 Million | Solo Lead |
| Deadpool 2 | 2018 | $785.8 Million | Solo Lead / Ensemble |
| Deadpool & Wolverine | 2024 | $1.33 Billion | Co-Lead / MCU Debut |
| Deadpool 4 | TBC | N/A | Not in Active Development |
The ‘Avengers’ and ‘Mutant Saga’ Horizon
While a solo film may be off the table, the "Merc" is far from retired. With Avengers: Doomsday scheduled for release on 18th December 2026, rumours persist that Reynolds will make a scene-stealing appearance alongside the likes of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.
Industry analysts suggest that Marvel Studios is holding Deadpool in reserve for the upcoming "Mutant Saga" (Phase 7), where he could serve as a bridge between the old X-Men universe and the new MCU reboot. Some fans have speculated that Reynolds’ "group" comments are a subtle nod to a long-gestating X-Force project.
The Verdict
For a character that thrives on breaking the fourth wall and upending expectations, a move into the background might be the most "Deadpool" thing Reynolds could do. By prioritising "scarcity," the actor ensures that when the red suit eventually returns, whether in an Avengers crossover or an X-Men team-up, the impact will be doubled.
As Reynolds put it: “If and when he does become an Avenger or X-Man, we’re at the end of his journey. For now, he’s better as the outsider looking in.”
