Princess of Wales Shares Message of Kindness Ahead of Christmas Carol Service
The Princess of Wales is using this year’s Together at Christmas carol concert to remind people how powerful small acts of kindness can be—especially “at a time when life can sometimes feel fragmented or uncertain.” Her message, shared with the 1,600 guests gathering at Westminster Abbey, focuses on love, compassion, and the quiet ways people support one another.
Catherine thanks those attending for the “time, care and compassion you give, often quietly and unspoken, and without any expectation or recognition,” adding that these gestures “make an extraordinary difference to the lives of others.” Many of the guests are volunteers or people who’ve dedicated themselves to helping their communities, from families running charities to young fundraisers supporting food banks.
She reflects on how Christmas encourages connection, writing: “Christmas is a time that reminds us how deeply our lives are woven together. Just as the roots of trees share strength beneath the soil, unseen but vital, so too do we.” The message echoes themes she has returned to throughout the year, including her belief in the grounding, healing effect of nature as she continues recovering from cancer treatment.
This year’s concert features traditional carols from the Westminster Abbey choir and performances from artists including Hannah Waddingham, Katie Melua, Dan Smith, Griff and Fisherman’s Friends. Prince William, Kate Winslet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and others will give readings linked to the themes of love, connection and looking out for one another.
Catherine encourages people to slow down in the middle of the holiday rush and notice the impact of their actions: “There is a softness to the season that reminds us of something easy to forget; that what we do matters. Our words, our choices, and even the ways we look out for one another – they ripple outward, touching lives we may never see.”
The service also ties into a wider effort to spotlight community groups across the UK, with 15 similar events taking place nationwide. After the Westminster Abbey gathering, the candles used in the congregation will be donated to a recycling project known as the Church Candle Challenge.
Her message closes with a simple hope for those attending: “As the year draws to a close, I hope this season brings you moments of peace and clarity, and that you too, feel surrounded by the same love and care that you offer so freely.”
