The Prince Estate, in a major global partnership with Legacy Recordings, has officially announced the release of Timeless, a monumental new posthumous album compiled entirely from rare and previously unreleased recordings spanning four decades.
The 10-track collection, scheduled for worldwide release on Friday 28th August 2026, represents a historic milestone for the icon's estate. It is the very first posthumous Prince compilation meticulously curated to bridge every single definitive era of his career, stitching together unearthed studio treasures tracked between 1977 and 2016.
The formal announcement coincided with the launch of "Prince Celebration 2026" the annual gathering of fans and musicians currently taking place across the legendary Paisley Park complex and downtown Minneapolis to commemorate a decade since the star's passing.
A Sonic Journey Through the Decades
Meticulously mastered by Grammy-nominated audio engineer Chris James, a trusted studio veteran who helmed Prince’s final records, including HITnRUN Phase Two, Timeless functions as a chronological retrospective of one of music's most famously prolific minds.
The tracklist begins at the absolute foundation, opening with "I Am You", a 1977 home-studio recording captured when Prince was an un-signed teenage prodigy in Minnesota. From there, the LP moves through lost iterations of classic eras, including the original 1981 rockabilly-infused prototype of "Tick, Tick, Bang" (which was later radically overhauled for the 1990 Graffiti Bridge soundtrack) and "Heaven", an emotional 1985 outtake from the legendary Purple Rain follow-up era.
To preview the collection, the estate has officially released the focus single "Stone". Tracked in the spring of 1995 during the dense Emancipation studio sessions, the song is a sleek, tight funk-pop masterclass originally written by Sandra St. Victor, Tom Hammer, and Jules Van Veen.
"Traces of Prince's remarkable artistic evolution are everywhere in this tracking list," a spokesperson for Legacy Recordings remarked. "From his earliest days as a multi-instrumentalist prodigy to his final moments behind a grand piano, it offers a rare opportunity to hear entirely unwritten chapters of his musical journey."
Unearthed Anthems and Final Performances
For the Purple Army, the global network of hardcore Prince enthusiasts, the album provides commercial closure for several mythical "Vault" outtakes.
The collection includes Prince’s original 1991 guide-vocal performance of "With This Tear", an achingly beautiful ballad he originally penned and presented to Celine Dion for her self-titled 1992 breakthrough album. The record also shifts into his later work, showcasing "Calabama" (a 2003 Musicology outtake) and "The Guilty Ones", a rhythmic 2007 studio track written as a playful, direct critique of rowdy audience members during his historic 21-night residency at London's O2 Arena.
Poignantly, the album draws to a close in 2016 with an intimate, breathtaking live recording of his fan-favourite B-side "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore?", captured on location just weeks before his untimely death during his stark, highly praised Piano & A Microphone solo theatre tour.
