Nicolas Cage Swings into 1930s New York in First Spider-Noir Trailer

‘70% Bogart, 30% Bugs Bunny’: Nicolas Cage Swings into 1930s New York in First Spider-Noir Trailer

MEXICO CITY — The monochrome web has finally unfurled. In a spectacular world premiere at CCXP Mexico City, Prime Video has released the first official trailer for Spider-Noir, the live-action reimagining of the fan-favourite Marvel character (trailer below).

The trailer confirms that Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage will make his television leading debut as Ben Reilly, a grizzled, down-on-his-luck private investigator in an alternate 1930s New York. In a move that has delighted cinephiles, the series will offer a "choose your own adventure" viewing experience, allowing audiences to watch the entire eight-episode season in either "Authentic Black & White" or "True-Hue Full Color."

A Hard-Boiled Hero

Unlike the traditional Peter Parker origin story, Spider-Noir follows an aging Reilly who has long since hung up his mask following a "deeply personal tragedy." The trailer paints a picture of a man drowning in a cynical, rain-slicked city, only to be pulled back into the shadows when he is hired by nightclub singer Cat Hardy (played by Li Jun Li) to find a missing friend.

Cage, who previously voiced the character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, has described his live-action performance as a tribute to the golden age of noir.

“It’s about 70 percent Humphrey Bogart and 30 percent Bugs Bunny,” Cage said in a special video greeting to fans. “He’s a spider trying to cosplay as a human. He’s older, he’s jaded, and he’s not afraid to punch a guy in the face while he’s drunk.”

A Rogue’s Gallery of Monsters

The trailer offers a first look at a grounded yet supernatural underworld. Rather than the colourful villains of the main Marvel universe, these antagonists are reimagined as gritty, Depression-era threats:

  • Brendan Gleeson appears as Silvermane, an Irish mob boss and "philosopher" of the underworld.

  • Jack Huston portrays Flint Marko (Sandman), a bodyguard whose own powers are reportedly "slowly killing him."

  • Abraham Popoola takes on the role of Tombstone, depicted here as a formidable World War I veteran.

Body Horror and Brutality

While the series maintains a classic detective aesthetic, the trailer teases a darker, "body horror" element to Reilly’s powers. Brief, unsettling shots of spiders and visceral web-slinging suggest that this is a far cry from the lighthearted action of the MCU.

Lamorne Morris stars as Robbie Robertson, a freelance journalist and the optimistic foil to Reilly’s cynicism. The trailer highlights their fractured friendship, with Robertson noting that Reilly "hasn't been the same" since the death of a woman named Ruby—a tragedy that appears to be the heart of the show's mystery.

The ‘Spider-Verse’ Pedigree

Produced by Sony Pictures Television, the series is executive-produced by the Spider-Verse powerhouse team of Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal. By setting the show in the 1930s, the creators are leaning into the "Chinatown disillusionment" of the era, promising a superhero show that feels more like a prestige crime drama than a standard comic book adaptation.

As the trailer ends with Cage’s gravelly voiceover declaring, "The wind smells like rain... and justice smells like gunpowder," it is clear that the Spider has finally found a home in the dark.

Spider-Noir premieres globally on Prime Video on 27th May 2026.
