Netflix Drops Retro VHS Edition of Stranger Things Season 1 for 10th Anniversary

Netflix Drops Retro VHS Edition of Stranger Things Season 1 for 10th Anniversary

It is hard to believe, but a whole decade has passed since we first grabbed our walkie-talkies, jumped onto our BMX bikes, and rode into the mysterious town of Hawkins, Indiana.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Stranger Things, which originally debuted on July 15th, 2016, Netflix has shadow-dropped a nostalgic surprise for fans: a completely reworked version of its first season that mimics the look and feel of a vintage VHS tape.

Dialing the Nostalgia Back to the 1980s

The retro-themed sci-fi drama has always worn its 1980s influences on its sleeve, famously sparking massive real-world revivals of 80s pop culture trends, from tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons to classic synth music.

With this special release, Netflix is taking that era-specific aesthetic to the absolute limit. This is not just a simple re-upload; the streamer has given all eight episodes of Season 1 a total visual and audio makeover.

To make the show look like it is playing on an old CRT monitor, the episodes are presented in a retro 4:3 aspect ratio. Viewers can expect authentic VHS quirks, including tracking lines, color bleeding, slight screen distortions, and that warm, fuzzy audio hiss characteristic of a well-loved cassette tape.

According to Netflix's official description, the new edition invites fans to:

“Rewind and relive the first season with a video store vibe that’s glitchy, grainy and gloriously vintage — just like you’d have rented it in 1983.”

If you want to experience the premier season exactly as if you were watching it in Mike Wheeler's basement, you can stream it globally right now by searching for Stranger Things: VHS Special Edition on Netflix.

What lies ahead for the franchise?

The main storyline of Stranger Things officially wrapped up on New Year's Eve with its highly anticipated Season 5 finale, which recently scooped up seven Emmy nominations.

For fans hoping to check in on Eleven, Mike, and the rest of the Hawkins gang years down the line, creators Matt and Ross Duffer have firmly shut down the possibility of a direct sequel, labeling such a project “a gross cash grab.”

However, the wider universe of the franchise is far from finished. Several exciting projects are already lined up to keep the fandom fed:

Project Type Release Details
Complete Series Deluxe Boxset Physical Media Releasing July 27th, 2026
Stranger Things: Tales From '85 Animated Series Season 2 arriving this Autumn
Stranger Things: The First Shadow Stage Play Recorded version of the Broadway run coming to Netflix
Unnamed Spinoff Live-Action Series Currently in development

While it is still too early to expect concrete news on the upcoming live-action spinoff series, Netflix kicked off the anniversary celebrations today by sharing a commemorative poster featuring artwork spanning all five seasons, with more fan-focused announcements expected to roll out.
