Suspended MP Arrested for Further Alleged Sexual Offences
A suspended Member of Parliament has been arrested for a second time in connection with a series of alleged sexual offences. Dan Norris, the former Labour MP and former West of England Mayor, is now being investigated on suspicion of the rape of one woman, the sexual assault of another, voyeurism, and "upskirting" offences against several women.
Background and Previous Allegations
In April 2025, Mr Norris was first arrested on suspicion of sexual assault, child abduction, and rape. While the police have confirmed that the allegations regarding child abduction and sexual assaults against children are no longer being investigated, the broader probe continues.
The alleged offences are suspected to have occurred between the 2000s and the 2020s. In addition to the sexual offence allegations, Mr Norris is now being investigated for suspected misconduct in public office. He remains on conditional bail.
Political Status and Local Impact
Despite the ongoing investigation, Mr Norris remains the MP for North East Somerset and Hanham, a seat he won from Jacob Rees-Mogg in July 2024.
-
Party Status: The Labour Party suspended him immediately following his first arrest in April 2025.
-
Parliamentary Standing: He has not resigned as an MP. Although he is currently barred from the House of Commons estate, he is permitted to vote by proxy.
-
Constituency Reaction: A petition with over 2,000 signatures has called for his resignation, claiming he cannot effectively serve his constituents.
-
Official Response: In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mr Norris stated he remains "vigilant" and continues to handle casework and legislative concerns for his constituency.
The Legal Process
Under current UK parliamentary rules, an MP only loses their seat automatically if they are found guilty of a criminal offence and sentenced to a prison term of more than one year.
Mr Norris’s term as West of England Mayor concluded in May 2025; he was succeeded by Helen Godwin.
'Complex' Investigation
Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that the investigation began in December 2024. A spokesperson stated:
"Investigations into sexual offences are inherently complex. Consequently, it will take a considerable amount of time for these enquiries to reach a conclusion."
The police emphasized that they are providing ongoing support to the victims and urged the public to refrain from speculation to avoid hindering the legal process.
