‘Lowball’ Crisis: Rush Hour 4 Stalls as Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker Reject ‘Insulting’ Salary Offers

LOS ANGELES — The long-awaited reunion of Detectives Lee and Carter has hit a significant roadblock. Just months after the project was greenlit, Rush Hour 4 has entered a state of uncertainty following a major pay dispute involving the franchise’s iconic stars, Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker.

According to a report first published by Puck News on Friday and corroborated by industry insiders this morning, both Chan and Tucker have rejected initial salary offers from Paramount Pictures. The duo, whose chemistry propelled the original trilogy to nearly $850 million at the global box office, are reportedly holding out for a deal that reflects their "legacy value".

The $24 Million Discrepancy

The core of the dispute lies in a staggering drop in compensation compared to previous entries. In 2007, both stars famously commanded salaries of approximately $20 million each for Rush Hour 3. However, sources claim that Paramount’s opening offer for the fourth instalment was a "paltry" $8 million apiece.

“It’s a bizarre opening gambit from the studio,” noted one Hollywood analyst. “You’re asking two of the biggest comedy icons in cinema history to take a 60% pay cut to revive a dormant franchise. In any other industry, that’s not a negotiation, it’s an insult”.

Production Pushed to September

The impasse has already begun to ripple through the production timeline. Originally slated to begin filming this summer across China, Africa, and Saudi Arabia, the start date has now been pushed back to September 2026 "at the earliest."

While sources close to the studio, speaking via TMZ have attempted to downplay the crisis as "standard Hollywood posturing," the delay suggests deeper concerns regarding the project's financial viability. Industry insiders suggest that the total production budget is currently capped at $120 million, a figure that would be almost entirely consumed if both stars were paid their previous $20 million rates.

[Table: Rush Hour Salary Evolution]

Film Year Jackie Chan Salary Chris Tucker Salary Status
Rush Hour 1998 $1.5m $3m Completed
Rush Hour 2 2001 $15m $20m Completed
Rush Hour 3 2007 $15m + % $25m Completed
Rush Hour 4 2026 $8m (Rejected) $8m (Rejected) In Dispute

The ‘Trump’ Factor and Director Controversy

The revival of the franchise has been shrouded in political and social intrigue. The project was fast-tracked in November 2025 after President Trump publicly expressed his desire to see a return to "raucous, old-school action comedies."

The President reportedly played a role in encouraging Paramount to re-engage with director Brett Ratner, who helmed the first three films but has been effectively blacklisted from Hollywood since 2017 following numerous allegations of sexual misconduct. Ratner, who recently directed a documentary on First Lady Melania Trump, is officially attached to direct Rush Hour 4, a decision that has already sparked backlash from advocacy groups.

‘Money Talks, Carter Walks’

Despite the current stalemate, there remains a glimmer of hope for fans. Both Chan, 72, and Tucker, 54, have frequently expressed their desire to work together again. Insiders suggest that a compromise involving a lower base salary combined with "heavy" back-end profit participation could be the key to unlocking the deal.

For now, however, the "fastest hands in the East" and the "biggest mouth in the West" are staying silent at the negotiating table. If a deal isn't reached by June, Paramount may find themselves with a $120 million budget and no one to pull the trigger.
