Italy Pauses Defence Agreement With Israel

Italy has decided to not renew its long-standing defence agreement with Israel, marking a shift in relations between two countries that have traditionally been close allies.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed the decision, saying that the government had acted “in view of the current situation”. The agreement, which was originally signed in 2006 and has been renewed every five years, covers cooperation between the two countries on military technology, training, and research.

The decision follows a spike in tensions over recent events in the Middle East. Italy recently protested after Israeli forces fired warning shots near a convoy of Italian UN peacekeepers in Lebanon, damaging a vehicle. Shortly after, Israel summoned Italy’s ambassador in response to criticism from Italian officials over attacks on civilians in Lebanon, which were described as “unacceptable”.

Meloni made it clear that disagreements between Italy and Israel had driven the decision, saying: “When there are things we don't agree with, we act accordingly,” and adding, “In light of the current situation, the government has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defence agreement with Israel.”

Despite Italy’s decision to not renew the agreement, Israeli officials have downplayed the impact, suggesting that the agreement had a limited amount of practical importance and would not affect the country’s security.

The shift reflects a broader change in tone from Italy. While Meloni’s government has generally supported Israel, it has recently become more critical, especially as conflicts in the region continue. Analysts say that the decision may also have been influenced by domestic pressure, with public opinion in Italy becoming increasingly uneasy about the situation.
