Three-Quels Confirmed: Illumination Breaks Silence on ‘Sing 3’ and ‘The Secret Life of Pets 3’
LONDON — Animation powerhouse Illumination has officially broken years of radio silence by confirming that highly anticipated third instalments of both Sing and The Secret Life of Pets are in active development.
The major dual announcement was delivered by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri during an industry-wide briefing ahead of the global theatrical launch of the studio's next feature, Minions & Monsters, next week.
The corporate confirmation instantly rejuvenates two of the most lucrative non-fictional-universe animation properties of the streaming era, which have collectively grossed over £1.6 billion ($2.1 billion) at the global box office but had remained strictly dormant since 2021.
Waiting for an Idea to Earn Its Place
For fans of The Secret Life of Pets, the update brings to a close a lengthy seven-year hiatus following the release of the franchise’s second chapter in June 2019.
Addressing the prolonged developmental delay, Meledandri revealed that the studio intentionally resisted rushing out a generic sequel purely for commercial gain, opting instead to wait for a narrative hook that justified reassembling the cast.
“It took us a while to come back to Pets, waiting for an idea that we felt really would earn its place rather than simply just making another Pets movie,” Meledandri explained to Collider. “I think we found a way into a Secret Life of Pets story that I certainly love.”
In a major structural win for the franchise's purists, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Chris Renaud, the director behind the original 2016 blockbusters as well as Despicable Me, has formally signed on to return to the director's chair. Meledandri confirmed that the creative team is already "well underway" with production boards, with an eye toward standard theatrical animation workflows.
Garth Jennings Returns to Direct Sing 3
Concurrently, the lights are being turned back on at Buster Moon’s theatrical syndicate. Following the vibrant success of Sing 2 during the competitive Christmas 2021 window, writer-director Garth Jennings has officially recommitted to the musical franchise.
According to studio updates, Jennings is currently "focusing all of his energy" alongside Illumination’s Paris-based animation pipeline to construct a third feature designed to completely deviate from the structural rhythm of the initial two chapters.
While the core jukebox musical format—historically powered by the voice talents of Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, and Taron Egerton, will remain structurally intact, Jennings’ script is reported to be introducing "entirely new ideas" to push the ensemble outside of their established comfort zones.

The 2030 Studio Roadmap
The aggressive dual confirmation forms a significant part of a broader, decade-spanning corporate roadmap for the Universal Pictures subsidiary, which is currently operating at the absolute zenith of its corporate influence following the record-obliterating box office success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Meledandri indicated that Illumination has successfully mapped out its entire operational slate through to 2030, carefully balancing reliable, heavy-hitting legacy properties alongside highly anticipated experimental corporate partnerships.
Alongside the two animal three-quels and the ongoing expansion of the Nintendo Cinematic Universe, the studio is actively deep in production on a top-secret, fully animated Barbie feature film in close collaboration with Mattel.
With formal theatrical release windows and voice cast return confirmations expected to be unrolled via Universal Pictures marketing channels later this autumn, the animation landscape has officially been put on notice: two of the most bankable family entities of the modern era are officially heading back to the big screen.
