A fresh blast of Arctic air is currently moving across the UK, bringing significant winter hazards including snow, ice, and widespread frost. The Met Office has issued multiple yellow weather warnings as temperatures are set to plummet well below freezing in many areas.
❄️ Snow and Ice Warnings
-
Scotland & Northern England: Yellow warnings for snow and ice are in place through Tuesday morning. Sleet and snow showers are expected to continue, particularly on higher ground, with some accumulations at lower levels.
-
Northern Ireland: A yellow ice warning is active from 20:00 GMT Monday to 10:00 Tuesday, with commuters warned to watch for black ice and slippery surfaces.
-
Wednesday Outlook: A new yellow warning for snow has been issued for Wednesday and Thursday, covering parts of Wales, the West Midlands, and Oxfordshire. Up to 15cm of snow could fall on higher ground, with significant travel disruption expected.
🌡️ Temperature Plunge
-
Tuesday: Most areas will see a dry, sunny but cold day. Highs will only reach 3°C to 6°C, but a brisk northerly wind will make it feel much closer to freezing.
-
Wednesday Night: Temperatures are forecast to drop sharply, potentially reaching -8°C to -10°C in northern Scotland.
🌊 Ongoing Flood Risk
Despite the cold, flood risks remain high due to saturated ground from recent weeks:
-
Environment Agency: There are currently 75 flood warnings (flooding expected) and 189 flood alerts across England, primarily in the South and Midlands.
-
Upcoming Rain: A new yellow warning for rain has been issued for Southern England from Wednesday morning, which could lead to further flooding as heavy rain hits already soaked terrain.
