Heatwave red alerts expected in Greece and Italy
Red weather alerts are expected in Europe and not only. More than thousands of cities are now endangered by this pivotal weather crisis.
While a large part of Italy is currently impacted by the hot weather, Greek wildfires burned during the night.
More than 7,000 acres of land on the southwestern coast has been reduced to ashes, a local mayor recently told Greek television, according to Sky News.
The news specifies that in Greece, almost 250 firefighters assisted by 75 fire engines, 11 aircraft and nine helicopters have been battling a blaze.
"We are living a nightmare," Christos Stathis, mayor of the town of Mandra in Greece, just told Open TV.
In Italy, temperatures in Sicily hit almost 47C on Wednesday, which was one of the records. The current record in Sicily, as announced by United Nations’ World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 2021, is this date 48.8C. Is it going to be finally surpassed?
As we read in The Guardian, several other places might be affected too. "The EU’s emergency response coordination centre issued red alerts for high temperatures for most of Italy, north-eastern Spain, Croatia, Serbia, southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro."
