‘Red Scare and Retro Supes’: Stylised First Trailer for The Boys Prequel Vought Rising Promises a 1950s Noir Murder Mystery

LOS ANGELES — The main story may have reached its bloody conclusion, but the multi-billion-pound cinematic universe of The Boys is only just getting started. Less than 48 hours after the parent series wrapped up its fifth and final season on Amazon Prime Video, the streaming giant has officially unveiled the inaugural teaser trailer for its highly anticipated prequel spin-off, Vought Rising.

The stylised, two-minute preview marks a dramatic tonal shift for the franchise, trading the modern-day corporate satire of the main show for a slick, 1950s noir aesthetic. Fronted by Supernatural star Jensen Ackles, the prequel is officially locked in for a global premiere on Prime Video in 2027.

Crucially, the trailer represents a major relief for the network's subscriber base, arriving just weeks after Amazon executives announced the outright cancellation of sister spin-off Gen V, leaving Vought Rising as the primary flagship torchbearer for the franchise going forward.

Back to the Beginning

Set against the paranoid backdrop of the mid-20th-century American "Red Scare", the series functions as both a twisted corporate origin story and a dark murder mystery. The narrative charts the early, post-World War II weaponisation of Nazi science by the all-encompassing mega-corporation Vought International, tracking how a pharmaceutical conglomerate successfully transformed a experimental serum—Compound V—into a commercial empire.

Ackles returns to step into the combat boots of Ben / Soldier Boy, the original, ultra-patriotic American superhero. Speaking to Variety about the prequel's narrative scope, Ackles hinted that the series will serve as an intimate character study of a man before he became the broken monster seen in The Boys season three.

“There’s a lot of life that Soldier Boy has lived when we see him in the main show,” Ackles explained. “When we are starting here, he’s dealing with the raw, everyday struggles that ultimately made him who he became. We get to see the military discipline give way to pure Hollywood showmanship.”

A Twisted Romantic Alliance

The core driving engine of the series is the volatile, fiery relationship between Soldier Boy and Clara Vought, played by a returning Aya Cash. Long-time fans will recognize the character as the early, desaturated iteration of the modern-day Nazi supervillain Stormfront, then operating under her 1950s corporate pseudonym, Liberty.

The trailer heavily emphasizes a vibrant, retro color palette that stands in stark contrast to the gritty, faded look of previous seasons. Showrunner Paul Grellong (The Blacklist) has leaned heavily into a theatrical USO-tour aesthetic, with costume designer Laura Jean Shannon crafting vibrant, primary-coloured uniforms for a completely new generation of historical "Supes."

Behind the Camera Layout

The production of Vought Rising wrapped its principal photography in Toronto on 11 March 2026 and has since spent the last two months navigating an extensive visual effects and post-production schedule.

The pilot episode, titled "Red Scare", is directed by Emmy nominee Sam Miller (I May Destroy You). Original series creator Eric Kripke remains firmly involved as an executive producer alongside the Hollywood comedy duo of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. According to production logs filed with the Writers Guild of America, Grellong has designed the prequel to run as an ongoing, multi-season drama rather than a self-contained miniseries, with scripting treatments for a second season already underway.

The Verdict

While many commentators expressed frustration that the final season of The Boys occasionally felt like a prolonged advertisement for its spin-offs, the visual panache of the Vought Rising trailer has successfully turned the tide of public opinion. By ditching modern cell-phone streams and focusing on a beautifully constructed, high-budget period mystery, Prime Video looks to have recaptured the creative spark that made the franchise a global phenomenon in the first place.
