Curiouser and Curiouser: Awkwafina Joins ‘Descendants 5’ as Disney Drops Whimsical New Trailer and Summer Premiere Date
BURBANK — The magical, multi-billion-pound world of Auradon is officially diving deeper down the rabbit hole. Disney Branded Television has blindsided fans by releasing the spellbinding official trailer for Descendants: Wicked Wonderland, the highly anticipated fifth instalment in the globally successful musical franchise.
Alongside the fast-paced, colourful new footage, the studio dropped a major piece of surprise casting news, confirming that Golden Globe-winning actress and comedian Awkwafina (Shang-Chi, The Little Mermaid) has formally joined the universe.
The Crazy Rich Asians star will lend her distinctive, gravelly vocal talents to a brand-new iteration of a classic Lewis Carroll entity: Chessy the Cat (a playful nod to the legendary Cheshire Cat). The announcement locks in a premier summer broadcast slot, with the film slated to debut on Disney Channel on Thursday 16th July 2026, before streaming globally on Disney+ the following day, 17th July.
The Bitter Fallout of Altering Time
Serving as a direct, high-stakes sequel to 2024’s massive streaming hit Descendants: The Rise of Red, the fifth film explores the catastrophic ripple effects of tinkering with historical events.
At the end of the previous movie, Red (Kylie Cantrall), the rebellious daughter of the Queen of Hearts, and Chloe Charming (Malia Baker), the perfectionist daughter of Cinderella, used a magical pocket watch to travel back in time and prevent the coup that turned Red's mother evil.
While they successfully saved Cinderella and reformed the Queen of Hearts (Rita Ora), the new trailer ominously addresses the central warning of the franchise: there are always consequences when you alter the fabric of time.
The trailer reveals that by changing the past, Red and Chloe have completely fractured the timeline, accidentally rewriting Auradon's history and unleashing a formidable new adversary. Lurking in the shadows of the updated reality is Maddox Hatter (Leonardo Nam), a ruthless, time-obsessed villain determined to raid the Royal Vault, seize the time-travel pocket watch, and bend the entire fate of Wonderland to his absolute will.
A Massive New Generation of Villain Kids
Under the direction of Kimmy Gatewood (The Muppets Mayhem), Wicked Wonderland is massively expanding the franchise’s mythology, introducing a dense roster of new legacy descendants who are caught up in the chronological chaos.
Among the most notable additions showcased in the promotional art is Liamani Segura, who portrays Pink, Red’s newly manifested, Wonderland-loving sister who didn't even exist in the original timeline.
The movie will also feature a highly anticipated cross-over appearance from the broader Disney animated canon, introducing Alexandro Byrd as Luis Madrigal, the son of Encanto's super-strong Luisa Madrigal.

| Max Hatter | Maddox Hatter | Brendon Tremblay | The conflicted son of the film's primary antagonist |
| Hazel Hook | Captain Hook (Peter Pan) | Kiara Romero | A new pirate VK navigating the Wonderland terrains |

The Gold-Standard Soundtrack Return
A fundamental hallmark of the Descendants franchise has always been its hyper-energetic, chart-topping musical numbers. To ensure the new soundtrack lives up to the multi-platinum standards set by the original trilogy, Disney has enlisted Emmy Award-winning choreographer Emilio Dosal (Wicked, Sneakerella) to orchestrate the movie's massive street-dance sequences.
Fans won't have to wait to stream the music, either; Walt Disney Records has confirmed that the official Descendants: Wicked Wonderland soundtrack will drop across all streaming formats concurrently on Friday 17th July, alongside a premium physical merchandise rollout from Mattel.
The Verdict
By choosing to double-down on the chaotic, visual whimsicality of Wonderland rather than returning to the safe, conventional corridors of Auradon Prep, Disney looks poised to deliver its most visually ambitious Descendants film to date. The addition of Awkwafina’s signature comedic timing provides an excellent layer of star power to anchor the younger cast, while the time-splitting narrative successfully raises the stakes for Red and Chloe.
Parents and teenagers can prepare to see if the girls can successfully repair the timeline when Wicked Wonderland officially opens its gates this July.
