Police Investigate Giant "8647" Written Into Grass Outside The National Mall

Police Investigate Giant

Federal authorities are investigating a massive imprint of the numbers 8647 that was found etched into the lawn of the National Mall in Washington DC.

The US Park Police confirmed that officers "responded to a report of vandalism" at around 11:30 AM on Thursday near the World War II Memorial. Live webcam footage from the Washington Monument and EarthCam time-lapses revealed that the markings, which appear as patches of dead or faded grass, slowly emerged over several days. While the sequence is highly visible from above, it remains difficult to make out from ground level.

Investigators have yet to establish how the lawn was marked. An agency spokesperson stated "The cause of the discoloration has not yet been determined. Grass samples have been collected for testing. The investigation is ongoing."

The number sequence has increasingly been used by critics to demonstrate their opposition to Donald Trump, who serves as the 47th US president. The digits combine the common restaurant industry slang "86", which means to remove, discard, or cancel an item, with "47."

While food service workers consider the phrase everyday lingo, the Trump administration views the numbers as an explicit incitement to violence. An Interior Department spokesperson labeled the markings "deranged vandalism" that "will not be tolerated," adding "Any threat against the President is taken very seriously by the Department, and our U.S. Park Police will investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable,"

White House spokesperson Davis Ingle also issued a fierce response to the incident, stating:

“Anyone who engages in or endorses political violence or assassination culture must be condemned in the harshest terms possible. They should also immediately seek psychiatric help to treat their severe and debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has warped their brains and made them sick in the head.”

However, the legal status of the phrase remains a point of contention. Earlier this month, a federal judge ruled in a separate case that the numbers alone do not constitute an illegal threat. The judge determined that a protest flag displaying "8647" outside a DC federal courthouse was protected under free speech laws.

The incident heavily mirrors an ongoing criminal case against former FBI Director James Comey. In April, the Department of Justice indicted Comey on charges of threatening the president's life after he published an Instagram photograph of seashells arranged into the sequence "8647" last year.

Comey, who quickly removed the image and maintains his innocence, has labeled the prosecution politically motivated. In a social media post addressing the fallout last May, he wrote: “I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence. It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down.”

The discovery on the Mall comes during a massive, Trump-led monument beautification campaign, which features a $13.1 million project to repaint the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool. The area is also bracing for massive crowds this weekend, with Ultimate Fighting Championship matches scheduled on the White House grounds this Sunday to coincide with Trump's birthday.
