The BBC has announced that electronic music performer and computer programmer Look Mum No Computer has been chosen to represent the United Kingdom in Vienna at this year's Eurovision Song Contest.
Look Mum No Computer is a solo artist, singer, and YouTuber who has also been referred to as "an innovator of rare musical machines.
Sam Battle, frontman of indie rock band Zibra, first appeared on the music scene in 2014 as Sam Battle. The group appeared on BBC Introducing in Glastonbury in 2015. Since then, he has been performing and recording under his own name.
I find it entirely bonkers to be embarking on this enthralling and wild ride,
he said.
"I have always been a huge Eurovision fan, and I love the magical joy it brings to millions of people every year, so to join that tradition and fly the flag for the United Kingdom is an incredible honour that I am truly proud of.
'Creativity, ambition and wit'
Look Mum No Computer is also a content creator with 1. He has over 4 million followers on his social media pages, as well as his YouTube channel. The Kent-based artist has drawn attention for his unusual electronic equipment, including organs made from Furby toys and Game Boys, synthesiser bicycles, and flame-throwing keyboards.
I've been designing, writing, and constructing my own visions from scratch, as well as documenting my process,
he said.
I will bring every ounce of my creativity to my shows, and I can't wait for you to hear and see what we've created. I'm hoping that Eurovision will be synthesized!
The BBC selects the UK's Eurovision entry through an internal process, with support from industry experts.
His bold vision, unique sound, and electric performance style make him a truly memorable performer,
BBC entertainment head Kalpna Patel-Knight said of their pick: 'He has a unique vision and a distinct sound. "Look Mum,
No Computer" embodies everything the UK needs to celebrate on Eurovision – innovation, aspiration, and a distinct British wit.' I am sure he will make us all proud on the international stage in May.
'Try something different.'
His album hasn't been revealed yet, but BBC Radio 2 DJ Scott Mills said he had seen it.
The United Kingdom is often chastised at Eurovision,
he said, or it has in recent years. We're always safe, but we always keep it right where the road goes. So this year, we're going to try something new. Why not? Let's try something different because it's different. Mills said of the song:
I want you to imagine a little bit of Basshunter's Now You're Gone and then a bit of Parklife [by] Blur, and perhaps a touch of West End Girls [by], as well as The Human League's synths. In there, there's a hint of Verka Serduchka. Perhaps just a tiny bit of Sex Pistols.
Stick all that in a blender and make a big anthem for Eurovision, one that I can imagine being performed in that arena.
In the coming weeks, the song will debut on Mills' Radio 2 breakfast show
in the coming week," the BBC announced. Following Austrian singer JJ's victory in Switzerland last year, the 70th Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Vienna. The grand final will be held on May 16th, but this year's competition has been dogged by controversies following five countries' withdrawal following the announcement of Israel's participation in the tournament. After losing in the competition for the first time in recent years, the UK is hoping to recover its fortunes. Olly Alexander finished second in Liverpool in 2022 after the high of Sam Ryder's second place in 2021, and remember, Monday finished in 19th place last year.
