‘Caine’ is Calling: Donnie Yen Officially Begins Filming New John Wick Spin-Off
HONG KONG — The "Wick-verse" is officially back in business. Martial arts legend Donnie Yen has confirmed that principal photography has commenced on the latest high-octane expansion of the franchise, a standalone film tentatively titled From the World of John Wick: Caine.
Yen, who serves as both the lead star and director for the project, shared the news via social media on Saturday, posting an image of a film clapboard with the caption: “Here we go.” The announcement marks the start of a new chapter for the blind assassin who stole the show in 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4.
Picking Up the Pieces of Chapter 4
The film is set to bridge the gap between the monumental ending of the fourth film and the future of the High Table. The plot reportedly follows Caine in the immediate aftermath of the events in Paris, as he navigates his newly found—and arguably fragile—freedom from the High Table’s obligations.
Joining Yen in the cast is Rina Sawayama, who will reprise her role as Akira. Given the tense post-credits scene in Chapter 4, which teased a violent confrontation between the two, fans are expecting a story defined by a complex "blood debt" and high-stakes revenge.
“What drew me to Caine is the contradiction,” Yen said in a statement released earlier this month. “He carries love and sacrifice in a world built on consequence. My goal is to create the most definitive martial arts-infused action film ever made.”
The Expansion of the ‘High Table’ Universe
The start of production on Caine signals a busy year for Lionsgate’s crown jewel. While Keanu Reeves’ return for a fifth John Wick film is currently in the "great idea" development stage, the studio is moving ahead with several other projects:
-
John Wick: Under the High Table: A sequel series currently in pre-production in Budapest.
-
Untitled Animated Prequel: Directed by Shannon Tindle (Kubo and the Two Strings).
-
Ballerina: The Ana de Armas-led spin-off, which hit cinemas in 2025, paved the way for this more direct character-focused sequel.
Table: Caine – Production Profile

Action with a Different Language
While Chad Stahelski remains involved as a producer and architect of the universe, Caine is being stylistically modelled on the unique, lightning-fast action cinema that Yen made famous through the Ip Man and Flash Point films.
Industry insiders suggest that the film will trade some of the "gun-fu" of the previous entries for a more "visceral, sword-and-fist" approach, leaning into Caine’s specific skillset.
The Verdict
For fans concerned about "Wick fatigue," the involvement of Yen behind the camera has provided a significant boost in confidence. By focusing on established characters with unfinished business, the franchise appears to be avoiding the pitfalls of a soft reboot.
With filming now underway across Hong Kong and Europe, audiences can likely expect a first teaser trailer toward the end of the year, with a theatrical release window targeted for late 2027.
