Cristiano Ronaldo has dropped his strongest hint yet that his professional playing career is drawing to a close, indicating that the current campaign will likely be his final year on the pitch.
Speaking in an interview given shortly before marrying his long-time partner Georgina Rodríguez in Cascais, Portugal, the 41-year-old opened up about his plans for life after sports.
"This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy," Ronaldo told Vogue.
The Al-Nassr forward, whose contract in Saudi Arabia runs until 2027, explained that he is actively preparing for retirement and prioritizing time with his family.
"I have my future all mapped out," he added.
"I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard. Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one. Have more fun, travel more, watch and play padel, which I really like, and continue to enjoy what I've earned - what we've earned. Because after all it's been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice."
The Final Chapter of an Iconic Career
The announcement comes on the heels of Portugal's World Cup exit against Spain in the round of 16. The tournament marked Ronaldo's sixth World Cup appearance, during which he brought his overall tournament tally to 11 goals across 27 total matches. Though he had previously stated the 2026 World Cup would be his last appearance on the international stage, he had avoided placing a set end date on his overall club career.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner boasts one of the most decorated resumes in sports history, featuring:
- Five Champions League titles
- Domestic league trophies across England, Spain, Italy, and Saudi Arabia
- European Championship and Nations League victories with Portugal
- Real Madrid's all-time scoring record with 450 goals in 438 games
- The all-time top goalscorer record in men's international football with 146 goals for Portugal
Currently playing out his fourth year in the Saudi Pro League, Ronaldo sits just 24 strikes away from reaching 1,000 career goals in senior football. While he cheered from the stands with his family as Al-Nassr kicked off their domestic title defense with a win over Al Fateh on Saturday, his comments signal that fans are witnessing the final months of a legendary era, which is a sentiment that has been echoed by his long-time rival Lionel Messi, who also recently expressed uncertainty regarding how much longer he will continue playing.
